there i was at the filling station, trying to refuel, but the release button for the cap said no!
luckily i wasn't desperate for the fuel, and headed home, when i got home the damn thing worked fine, and has been ever since.what do i do if it happens again?is there an over ride,or will i be screwed and have to force it?

I'd be kind of interested in how to FIX the filler cap. I went the stage further Roddy and had to stop for fuel (of course as mine's the 4.6 petrol and not LPG) and the button said "no". As I had to get some petrol I tried to gently pry it open. The result of that is that I now carry a roll of Duck tape in my glove box and a pair of scissors. The release button is stuffed and what ever little catch holds the filler cap closed is long gone.

Has anyone changed the release button, and if so where do you get them and how tricky was it, and is it possible to replace the catch on the filler flap itself? Same questions on that too really.

Funnily enough I was poking around in the dash today trying to see what and where the button was. I had a dream of trying to fix it this weekend.

I'm off on the RR run from Gaydon to Stoneleigh next weekend and thought I'd try and sort a few things out before then. Namely my patented the Duck tape fuel cap mod

you mentioned a range rover run is this for any range rover,or just classics, certain years or can anyone go? cheers for the insight,

P38spares has fuel filler release button. Look on RR.net as I'm sure there's a mod you can do to access from the boot.

Not sure about the the earlier ones but my 2000 MY has an emergency release pull cord tucked behind the offside rear light cluster. I have to say that when I pulled mine it wasn't attached to anything, but the thought was there....

Roddy - As far as I know anything as long as it's an RR can be on the run. It's celebrating 40 years of RR. Mine's a 95 reg P38 and assuming it stays in one piece long enough to make the run I'm going. Email them at [email protected] and see what they say. I got a reply pretty quickly. Let me know if you are going.

Cheers for the cap advice. I'll have a look today and see what damage I've done and give them a call. Wish I'd known about the release cable (assuming I don't have the same luck as Rewmer of course.

OK, I can get a switch with no real problems and looking at it I reckon even I could change it. The bigger issue now is the cap itself. The little catch that held it closed has gone. Any ideas where I could get one of those or is it a trip to a main dealer do you reckon?

Is this the little bit of plastic that has pinged off does anyone know and if so I'm assuming all my worries will float away if I get one? There's a small silver pin poking out just inside the fuel cap area which looks like it would receive the flap latch but I don't have one to look at obviously and compare. Mine is on a forecourt floor somewhere in Lincolnshire now.

I bought one of these little plastic clips a while back. I'm sure that I got it on ebay. If I can find the paperwork or something I'll stick some more info up for you.

Found it.
It was DLS LAND ROVER SPARES on ebay and it was only May this year.

mines also a 2000 diesel & did exactly the same thing when i pulled the cored, i couldnt find where it was ment to attach either.

I found the various parts but my local dealer has quoted me £72 for both the dash release switch and the flap latch including fitting so I'm taking it in tomorrow. Hopefully they will have to fix my wobbly dash when they replace the switch as well. Sadly that does mean the end of my Duck tape mod so I hereby release the patent on that.

It must be good to have money!

I'll even bet that you wobbly dash is only because the last person to take it apart didn't get the screws back into the proper holes. Been there, done that.

Yup. I noticed it was on wrong and tried to get it all back together properly the other day and almost managed it. "Almost". It's saying something when even I managed to improve on it I can tell you.
