Hi all i am new on here but am not new to forums, i have a question i have a 2001 p.38 with the bmw diesel engine which i love it has done nearly 100k and i will change soon , my dilema is do i go for a new shape RR with a ford engine or go to a x5 and follow the diesel engine i like, are the ford engines any good ? I am not a serious off roader my RR is my family car as i am a farmer, i have a defender for the serious stuff :)

What Ford engine?
Ther earlier ones had BMW, V8 petrol or straight 6 diesel (Td6), not the same as in the P38.
Later ones had Jaguar V8 petrol then a V8 turbo diesel. This is inspired by the V6 Jaguar engine as used in the Discovery and RR Sport (TDV6) and is unique to Land Rover (Range Rover & Range Rover Sport, TDV8). I suppose it could be called a Ford engine, but it isn't used in any Ford.

But they are ford units made in a Ford factory in South Wales and 10 times better than the BMW cr*p they replaced.

Couldn't agree more, although I thought the TDV8 was a Dagenham product

The TDV6 and TDV8 units are from a joint venture between Ford and Peugeot, so I'd say there have some good pedigree behind them.

Go for a test drive, I have to believe that the BMW X5 3.0d is a better drive over the P38.

The x5 is a great car my bro has one(4.8) but lets face it no one realy thinks they are a 4x4 not even my brother...RR is the only wat to go,troubles and all..

X5 doosels were prone to injector faults and V8's are extortionate to service and the X5 is really crap off road due to silly sized low profile road biased tyres, so yes the range rover is the better option, warts an all.
There are loads of people in dumfries defecting from X5 into RR sport or similar

Given the choice I would opt for the TDV8 if you can afford new, I'd be happy with the TD6 myself, proven performer in a great vehicle, what is left to think about :)

The TD6 is the same unit they use in the X5 but Land Rover have tinkered with it. The L322 is a BMW in Land Rover clothing to the extent that my CD changer is playing up and I found BMW stickers all over it.

Although the TD6 was a BMW engine, made by BMW, I believe that by thetime the Land Rover engineers had finished adapting it for an off road vehicle, there were virtually no parts in common.
