What oil do you use in your p38?
Is synthetic a much superior product?

in mine i use 10w40 semi! i have a 1996 4.6 hse, not knowing what you have makes it a little hard to figure out! lol..........

year? petrol? diesel?

as far as fully synthetic goes it is a superior product if you engine has been designed around it, i think it is possible to use fully synthetic in a petrol P38 (think) but i have heard it hardens the seals, and they dont revert to there origonal state if you go back to semi! maybe an untrue rumour? who knows? again an engine designed around fully synthetic would have the right seals if this is infact true!

95 HSE 4.6

The one and only previous owner used synthetic, but in the loads of service history it only states that the oil has been repaced with synthetic not the make or grade,

Any ideas what I should use?

Fred

Castrol magnatec, 10w40 semi!

Hi
I have always used a semi synthetic oil in my 2000 4.6 which I change every 4 to 5000 miles. I recently had it serviced by a independent and they put Castrol Classic XL in which is a 20-50 grade mineral oil for modern( 60's to late 70's)classics. This has shown a improvement in oil consumption and as I change the oil at these sort of miles the detergent effect of synthetic or semi synthetic would not seem to matter. The guy said thatwas in his opinion Castrol XL was the ideal lubricant for a engine thats been around since the 60's

this time of year it may be good but the cold 20 spec oil is not good in the winter, i tried some 20/50 mineral and timed it wrong as it was in feb this year, nasty noises like slight knocks when idleing from cold start, they went when it reved but i didnt like to hear it...! not good at all!
i drained it and replaced with 10/40 semi and it sounded great in same temperatures!

my advice would be not to use it in winter!

Yes I agree it's not for your northern winters. But down here in the sunny south I can run it all the year round. In saying that I do a couple of winter trips to the north so I will prob put 15/40 in frof nov to march.

And to hijack this thread, in the same vein, what oil for 2.5 Beemer diesel, I know 'RTFM' but learned opinoin and experience counts for a lot
Cheers

You never believe how complicated oil can get would you?

Thanks for the information its a great help.

Regards Fred
