Indeed, I need air before I can do much else. I'd obviously have few problems sourcing a replacement compressor. But whilst I know I can get the piston seal/liner and thermal switch without any issues, is it possible to get hold of the end bearing which is situated in the end cap adjacent to the thermal switch plate. I'm pretty sure that the bearing failure has led to the piston seal failure and the axial or radial float in the shaft (maybe both) due to said float has assisted in the untimely demise of the thermal switch. Of course I have been wrong before :)

I suppose it is plausible that people actually have been abducted by aliens. But highly unlikely. :):)

Exactly. To quote Conan Doyle "when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth"

I have been caught twice by overlooking the simplest of things, who would have thought 6 out of 8 genuine BMW coils would be faulty ??? To name one occasion.

My experience of BMW quality suggests nothing is impossible:rolleyes:

They can be repaired if not to far gone. But i would suggest a new compressor. You can get supposedly refurbed ones from here and there but the depth of the refurb is sometimes questionable. A new piston seal and exhaust O'ring is not a deep refurb. You maybe buying something that will fail along the same lines as your old one PDQ. But the choice is yours.

More than likely made by BMW China inc or BMW Mumbi Plc. :D:D:D

Absolutely, I agree 100%. Just waiting for a guy to get back to me about a new old stock landrover unit. The ones on fleabay are just as you describe either piston seal and o ring refurbs or even just cleaned up cosmetically. Cant afford a new unit from landrover and am shying away from the dunlop units so will have to look at some kind of recon unit if plan "A" fails. Unless anyone out there in Landyland can help.

The Dunlop units are fine. But i have had one with the exhaust O'ring not secured in it's seat and the support blade set to far off the reed valve causing the O'ring to unseat and fall out. They are fitted with a bastard size Jap standard O'ring. The ones supplied with piston seal kits in this country are to small in cross section and will not seal. There are ways around it of course but you would need JISB 2401 P6 or a French NFT47-501 R5 to fit a new one. They are like hobby horse **** over here. SIDE NOTE. Can you get any frog ones Keith? Could do with some.

Have you tried Radwell International in Newcastle Under Lyme ?

Difficult to find anything like that over here Tony, they don't like selling to non trade clients.

It can be got round Keith easy enough by knocking up some 0.25 mm packing on the lathe to go under the standard O'ring so no sweat really. :):)

For info, new pump received and fitted along with small connector pipe to the valve block. Amazing what the system will do if you fill it with air. Pumped from flat on the bump stops to operating up and down normally in about 5 mins. I can live with that, doesnt seem to be dropping noticeably but will check in the morning. Many thanks to all who advised/contributed.....you know who you are!

:amen:
