Hi people, im having a bad time again and could do with some advice, ive had my p38 for 3 weeks or so now and had other probs with it but got um sorted, (check my other threads) basicaly mine never has over heated... until i towed a trailer down the motoway, it weighed 1.2ton, now it gets a tad boring now so bear with me please, last week i noticed i had a blade missing on my fan and it didnt "howl" at all (could hardly hear it) sooo i got 1 off ebay... 3 month old... the chap couldnt stop his over heating so he got the fan,rad etc etc, basicaly no matter wot it still got hot, so i ended up buying the fan, (genuine LR stamp on it) i fitted it with a new belt, when i fired her up it howled like ive never heard but took ages to go off (over 10 mins in the morning) so im on the motoway thinkin all is going to be good when the temp creeps up, if i kept her under 2,600 rpm it was ok, anything over and she started to get hot, i checked the old fan and it has a BMW clutch on it and fan blades (ali center) yet the new 1 has LR stamped on blades and a huge center clutch... WHAT should it have??? the smaller bmw or the larger LR?? im confused, il try to add pics to show the differance, i could of possibly got a 300tdi fan by mistake or its just faulty... HELp pleaseeee

P.S the smaller center is the BMW and the larger is the LR, can any 1 have a look at there dse fan for me?

i changed my viscous fan as well,it has the smaller one on my p38 diesel.

Hi,

Technically they are both the correct fan. The BMW version was fitted up to around mid 2000, then it was uprated to improve cooling performance from mid 2000 onwards. It was also then spec'd for earlier cars instead of the BMW unit as the LR one is better.

BMW version has flat plate on the front (bi-metallic strip), LR version has a bi-metallic coil on the front.

I'd fit the LR one, much better for cooling performance.

:)

hi, i see your based in bolton so heres a suggestion for you , go to emmotts at colne up to end of m65 trn right to next roundabout then left towards colne go approx 5/700 yds see chippy on corner on left . on the right is a church at the chippy turn left small street at end canal bridge go over the bridge and follow rd to the right ,emmotts up on the right . you have just found aladins cave !!!!!! speak to joe or his son tell them manchester mozz sent you . they will identify all u need the stock is plentifull and the prices are spot on ,they are really great at what they do . ive tried all the rest of places including main dealers and unless ur spendin 50/70/100 grand they coudnt care less .. the other good place is landranger services at stockport great people great advice and very reasonable prices ..hope this helps im a newbie too cheers mozz emmotts no is 0128259468

See how you get on but I dont think your fan is your problem, at 50 to 70mph the air coming through your grill should cool the rad, you'll never have a electric fan cut in when doing them speeds, I'd be looking at your water pump to see if the impeller has come loose on the back of the pump.

hi, i dint manage to get upto 70 mph, i could only do 55mph kepin the revs down (hard with an autobox) when pulling trailer, if i let her work hard towin the trailer she would overheat... but with out the trailer (trailer weighs 1.5ton) i can cruise at 90-95 mph go off roading... sit in traffic... do allsorts with out even thinkin of gettin hot... she just didnt like pullin the big trailer... ive got to tow it again just to make sure the probs gone lol.

I THINK IVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM, found out today that i may have a crack in the head, or a head gasket problem, theres slight small tiny bubles in the header tank... only small looks like freshly poured water etc etc... and with harly any over pressuring im thinkin its not gasket it could be the head its self...
