hi, my 97 dse has blown a pipe to radiator up , which i changed. now trying to blow top hose . pipes are going really hard and trying to bulge . is this a sign of head gasket failure ?

Some people have suggested water pump but others have said no chance .Apparently it had a new rad about 12 months ago ( iv had it 6 months !

deffo not water pump, will overheat without pump and blow water out but not what you describe. Is the little pipe from the Rad to the expansion tank clear?

Stick your nose in the expansion tank filler, on a gasoline engine you can smell a head gasket gone. Never tried it with a diesel but i guess you should be able to smell exhaust.

Another test
From cold remove filler cap to equalise pressure, replace the cap. Start engine and give it a good rev but only for about 10 seconds. stop engine and immediatly remove cap, if you hear a gush of air escape, again it points to a head gasket as it hasn't had time to make pressure due to heat

petrol or diesel? if diesel poss head gasket or thermostate or a blockage. But if petrol mmmm sorry to say but more than likley the block has gone porus they are very common for this had to much experiance with them. If thats the case recon your own engine or a new one. but if you wont a quick fix go on e bay and there is some additive on there (sorry carnt remember what its called) but its on landrover spares i have used it in my mates p38 two years ago and still going on today good luck

last week the top hose went on my dse put a 9" split down it there was no tell tale sign it was going put a new hose onand i could hace it ticking over for an hour without it getting hot start reving it up pipe went solid turns out mine was the water pump the plastic blades of the pump had come away from the shaft changed it over (2 hours start to finish) and been ok since, also if its got to hot the wax in the cap on the header tank can go and not release pressure thru the overflow pipe, if you still have probs a pot of k seal in the system works wonders
