Hello fellow land rover fans, I am new to the forum having recently purchased a P38 DSE auto and am wondering if anyone could offer me some advice.
As stated I have a 1997 R reg DSE 2.5 auto that has covered 83k miles. The problem I am experiencing is a quite loud vibration / rattle when the vehicle is fully warmed up and on tickover. The moment I increase the revs ever so slighty the noise / vibration goes away. It only occurs when at idle. It sounds like the noise is resonating out from the transfer box or auto gearbox sump but i've no idea what is actually causing the noise / vibration. I get this noise only when warm, as the idle speed has lowered when the engine is warm, and will do it when I am both in gear and not in gear. The auto box and transfer box both work smoothly and with no issues. Please could anyone offer me some advice / guidance as to any common or well known parts that fail etc. I tinker with my own vehicles so have an OK basic understanding of mechanics etc. Thank you in advance, Paul.

Flex plate betwix torque convertor and flywheel have known issues. I believe they are just visible through the small inspection plate on the bell housing.

Thank you very much for your help. I'll have a look into both the flex plate and the crankshaft damper.
If anyone else has any guidance or suggestions it would be much appreciated. Thanks again and keep you all posted when finally resolved.

Just a daft suggestion but have you tested the viscus fan?? since changing mine ive got a slight vibration on tick over when warm and the vibration seems to travell threw everything, feel it on the box (it sounds like) but ive proved this to be the viscus by taking it off then starting her up... smooth as silk.
Probrably wont help you what so ever but defanatly worth a try lol:D

Hi: I have exactly the same problem "idle vibration when engine is hot" (among other problems with air suspension) with my 1999 RR P38 DSE. Did you ever manage to fix the vibration in your RR? If so, what have you done? Thanks. Len:)

I have finally managed to slove the problem of the vibration / noise when at idle on my auto DSE. Following some great advice from "rewmer" (thank you very much) it turned out to be the flex plate in the gearbox. It would seem that a heavy handed individual at the main dealer managed to damage / bend the plate when fitting a new engine. I've now had a new plate and 8 stretch bolts fitted and the noise is gone!!!! Hope this helps someone else in the future. Thanks again - cracking forum.

DMF was checked when I had the gbox out and was fine.
Also, from all I've heard/read DMF vibration is like an engine running only on 5 cylinders. The vibration I'm getting is not that strong.

Had slight engine vibration on my dse (manual, DMF new this year) couldnt work out what it was then the water pump started leaking, took it off and found the circlip holding the bearing in had come out, fitted new pump vibration gone.

Hi Guys.

It is now time I sorted my slight vibration. 1995 DSE Auto.
However I think I have checked most visible things on here.

The vibration I get is not effected really if cold or hot. it is at tickover until around 2200rpm and then she is really super smooth.
I took it to a LR specialist and we played around with the tickover but although the tickover is now set slightly higher (and it is better for this) it is still very much there. You can feel it through the throttle peddle and when slowing doen and you get into the rev zone above the vibration returns!
I have crawlled all over the exhaust and cannot find anything rubbing.
must next thought is to remove the drive belts and see if the vibration goes away or not to try and pinpoint. Any ideas guys?

Have a look at the crank pulley, the torsional vibration damper might have given up.

If the engine vibration occurs on both manual and auto did you mention something a while back about the number4 injector? Or am i just imagining?

I have checked the crank pulley by visual inspection when running and by giving it a good yank but looks solid.

I have this too. I compared it to a few other DSEs at a recent meet, and they all seem to do it to a greater or lesser degree. I know that's not exactly helpful...

From the 1500 views on this thread it seems a lot of other people have the problem to :5bsmash:

Apparently there is... the DMF,

however its an expensive fix plus the labour a lot of people don't try for the sake of a light blip on the throttle. In fact it's probably close to the value of a lot of the cars!

Had my clutch done my indie and he said there was a lot of movement in the DMF do I want it changing...."how much?" "£458 for the part no labour".... after a £520 clutch replacement? Bank manager said no...

Chances are in 40k miles it would be exactly the same....well documented fault for the P38. There was also a TB for early models to replace one of the many computers to eliminate a rough idle customers complained of. That ones not so well publicized for obvious reasons.
