I thought the 4 pin was fitted because of the traction control on the 4.6s.

For the early ones you only had a 4 pin diff on the rear because you only had traction control on the rear. Later models had 4 wheel traction control and had a 4 pin diff added to the front as well.

Not quite sure why only the 4.6s had the 4 pin though. Wouldn't have thought the traction control would put much extra loading on as it only brakes the spinning wheel.

Anyway, something to consider...

I bought a complete low mileage axle when my diff went.

Given the torque of the diesel, I would have thought that is exactly where you would need the stronger diff?

Both the 4.0 and 4.6 have more torque than the diesel that is why the 4 pin was used. But i suppose he can fit whatever he wants to.

Must look up the figures, I thought the diesel had more torque than the 4.0:)

Can only find NAS specs for torque but will be very simular. Nas has about 5 BHP on Uk version so torque will not be a lot different.

1995-8 4.0 236 lb ft at 3,000 rpm. 4.6 280 lb ft at 3,000 rpm.

1999 on. 4.0 250 lb ft at 3,000 rpm. 4.6 300 lb ft at 2,600 rpm.

Diesel is 268 nm at around 2,500 rpm that is 197 lb ft.

So well down on petrol. Goes up to 319 nm 235 lb ft with a power box.
