P38 diesel has poltergeists?

You can replace the engine ECU with a new one that has not been set to "Secure Mode" then it will start regardless of the state of the BECM link.

Datatek that would be very useful. Where do I need get one of those?! Is it a service you offer?

Try a Bosch dealer. It has to be new and you have to specify "Non Secure Mode" at the time of purchase.
I seem to remember that it is possible to do a mode to remove the security, you could try Googling that.
 
That's interesting. The feedback from the BMW forums - mainly happily mad drifters and bio diesel burners - is that the pump is a straight swop. But these guys seem to have amazing technical skills.

I badly need the earlier mechanical pump and ANY advice about fitting it.

It's straight swap only for older type of M51 with smaller hole(different block) for injection pump.
 
This is what I'd like to do. Can't believe no one has done this to a p38. It would seem to me to offer a potential bypass to a whole raft of problems
 
Overfueling as these guys are after 200bhp plus... but the bloody thing is running. Quite honestly I don't give a damn how it runs IF it runs. I'm sick of towing dead P38's...

Then buy yourself a Nanocom and sort out your problems. Once an engine ECU is set to robust (needing EMS code) it cannot be reversed as far as i am aware other than by getting a new ECU that is left none robust (not needing EMS code). And they are not cheap. All UK vehicle second hand ones will be set robust. Some markets don't use it. A new none robust ECU will set you back in excess of £1400.00.
 
I've got a p38 4.6 with GEMS - and each time I attempt to discuss *making* the !*******! thing go on any forum I get a "oooh, you don't wanna do that" response.

Yes - I think there are many of us that *do* want to re-engineer the beast so every element of it does what it's damn well told - reliability in a difficult situation is everything.
Security is pointless if it won't go!

Well, stuck a battery on the 'other' p38 this morning and despite being left with a flat battery she turns over, so that ecu definitely isn't asking for codes.

So it IS possible and personally I find it hard to believe any p38 owner is shelling out £1,400 for an ecu.

My last p38 was a '96 4.0 and it certainly needed the code.
 
Well, stuck a battery on the 'other' p38 this morning and despite being left with a flat battery she turns over, so that ecu definitely isn't asking for codes.

So it IS possible and personally I find it hard to believe any p38 owner is shelling out £1,400 for an ecu.

My last p38 was a '96 4.0 and it certainly needed the code.

No one here would bother to replace the EDC IMO, with a Nanocom you can enter the code and the EKA code if required.

Depends what your other P38 is, Diesel will turn over but not start without synced code one of the petrols is same other petrol won't turn over without code. Diesel and petrol ECUs are different animals. If you want a diesel ECU that is set (None robust) that is what you have to pay. As said earlier, once the diesel ECU has been set robust is CANNOT be changed. Unless someone has developed diag that will do it, but i doubt that, no commercially available unit i know of can do it.

There was a post a long time ago that intimated that a wire mod on the ECU would disable the need for the sync code. I did not keep a note as I could not see I would ever need it.

You certainly can on the GEMS ECU but not as far as i know not on the diesel. We both have the tools to sync so not needed. If you could, then it would be good for some i suppose, but if it's that easy why have BBS made so much money out of syncmates? :);)
 
If you suspect a fuse box problem take it out and send it to me if just resolderd mine

It was the diesel EDC I read about, I rarely bother with the petrols.
The mod consisted of cutting a track and inserting a link but I do not remember what exactly. If circuits were available I guess it would not be too hard to figure but got better things to do.
