Hi, I just been to blackpool in the range rover. and the hot starting is really bad after a motorway run, even with the hot start fix.. but its started cutting out for no reason when stopping at a junction.. On the way i stopped at services and it wouldnt start so luckly I was on a hill so bumped it off but then it cut out at the roundabout and had to get the rac to come cos the battery went flat trying to start it.. With my battery it turns over but with the rac battery it flies ofer and starts almost straight away.. Could the battery cause the hot start problems? also it was fine all the way home, untill the end of my street where I stopped at junction and it just cut out, luckly started again but after turning over for ages.. What could cause this cutting out?

Its a 2.5 BMW deisel..

Thanks
Shaun

the hot start is to do with the amount of fuel injected when engine is hot or the glow plugs not coming on when temp is hot from temp sender, dunno much about diesels but its what i have read,

change the 4th injector (the one with the sensor).

You don't have to buy the expensive LR spares. Bosch produces them for BMW and you can buy them either at a Bosch dealer or at BMW or vaux

or make this! but make it switchable so it only comes on when you want to start it!!!

also try taking resistance of temp sender at cold and at hot. you then need to fool the car to thinking its cold then switch the signal back to normal when started!

the hot start problem on these engines is because the pump internals are worn and not supplying the required amount of fuel when its warm, the hot start fix just fools the ecu into thinking the engine is cold and therefore this then injects more fuel, something like having a bit of choke on like in a petrol engine.

The first two things you want to do is:

1. Make sure your battery is tip top, buy a good new one if its fairly old, should be about £60 for a 644 battery. These cars need good volts for many things. Mine was suffering from a bad battery and all sorts was playing up, EAS, bad starting, central locking, new battery fitted and it was all perfect.

2. Check your spill pipes. They are found under the black plastic cover on the top on the engine where the injectors are. As the pipes get old they can crack and this is definately a cause of bad starting. You can buy original pipes cut to length for about £30 or buy 1.5m from somewhere and cut them yourself. Inside diameter of pipe is 3.2mm.

Once you have done those two things, you can look at other parts if you still have a problem.

Links are for illustration, the battery is a good one, but your local tyre fitter should be cheaper and the braided pipe may not be completely suitable for the job, not sure, it could well be. :)

Thanks for that mate, I'll try them things 1st.. Im not sure the battery is up to the job.. I have a range rover classic v8 with a good battery its a bosch 7AA 70ah but will that be up to the job or just to try on the p38? or does it need to be a 115ah like the one thats on?

Thanks

The p38 diesel should have a type 664 battery with 107 amp/hr

just looked in halfrauds and this battery will fit but they are just pushing their own brand, try kwick **** or a n other car parts shop.

I went and bought the battery from halfords, They said I had 30days to return it if I wasnt happy so thought I'd try it.. Also bumped into a friend there with a trade card so it only cost £68.12 instead of £98.99 so thats a result..

The car seems better now too, runs better, seems to have more power but maybe thats me wishing.. haha.. The hot starting seems a lot better too so will try it a few days and see how it goes

well it all seems a lot better with the halfords battery.. The hot starting seems better too, just drove home for work and it was running at normal opperating temp for well over half way home and when i got home i turned off, and started with no preheat and it fired up almost straight away....
