P38 change from EAS to springs

Hi all,

Went to the garage today, he run the diognostics, and this time I got told it was the rear height sensor and a leak in one of the airbags, price I got quoted was:
189- rear height sensor.
89- for the airbag.
Plus labour putting the total to 476.

Does this seem a fair deal.
If not and anyone who can do this themselves for a better price, inclusive of bacon sandwich and lots of brews, plus a garage to work in is welcome to come and sort it out for me.

When I mentioned the cruise control not working he said it might put itself right when the suspension is sorted, not sure if this is true or a load of rubbish.
What do you all think.

Sounds a reasonable price from a garage (obviously a lot more than if you do it yourself).
Cruise control is a separate issue, unrelated to eas. Could be as simple as a perished or disconnected hose.
 
My p38 is on springs and drives like a dream, i bought it already converted. But i have to say EAS is better, and it is worth sorting out rather than converting. And may i just say after 4 diszzos, early v8, 200,300,td5, i wish i had got Rangey years ago:)
 
sas1810, there fantastic prices, where do garages get theres from then or is it because there going through land rover.

Height sensor about £64.00, air bag around £50.00. Hour and a half to fit both. Seems bloody expensive to me. £250.00 maybe in a garage.

they dont account for people who use forums like this. its amazing what info you get from this wonderful place :)..

half the time, they use the same places we do, ok they might get a bit of trade discount if lucky, but still the same places. they have their price, think of what you are like, ie; hows he dress, whats he talk like, whats his watch like, whats the car like, then price accordingly. i've seen places quote TWICE the OEM prices for parts just on the customers appearance.. it happened when i work in the parts dept for M/Benz. guy came in with a friend, i told him the price and he told the other guy that it was going to be £100 more than i told him! he said it was because he got it at trade and he had to charge him retail. i said, "no mate, what i just quoted you WAS retail." the other guy told him to get lost and bought the part himself.
 
when you put it like that, he can stick 475 where the sun doesnt shine.
i was not going to bother with the other one who said if i get the parts he will fit them for me at just labour cost.

Thats what makes this site the best Land Rover / Range Rover site on the net...period!

£250!!? IN A GARAGE!!? Wammers 'yer avin a larf'. A garage will always overestimate on their time. You and I know how cheap we can get the parts and how long the job should take, but a garage will book it in for half a day or whole day. They never price up for cheapest parts and least amount of time. Plus they'll whack on a set fee for overheads (rent,leccy,tools). Most indies will use one or two motor factor suppliers to get their parts delivered. He's not going to start phoning around or trawling the internet for cheapest parts - and if he does he's not going to pass that saving on.
Most of us here give and take advice based on doing the work ourselves. If your going to own a Rangey and pass it over to a mechanic/garage for everytime there's a problem then you're going to need a very deep wallet.
Plus we're assuming the garage diagnostic is correct and he knows what he's doing.
If he did know what he's doing he'd be charging for 2 airbags. You never change them one at a time.
I think our man should get his parts from island 4x4, and then just pay the labour charges to the garage. And if he doesn't want to use them again, he can sit there and watch them with stopwatch in hand.:bounce:

Having owned and run my own garage i am fully away of what goes on in some outlets. Genuine, from main agent height sensor £139.79, genuine air bag £266.94. Total £406.73. After market air bag from same main dealer £65.95. Total parts then £205.74 so that makes £270.20 a little over the top for maybe a max of two hours labour. After market bits would take the total parts cost to just over £100.00 so the labour charge looks even worse with that considered. The main dealer works on standard times he cannot charge you more than the official time for the job. UNLESS he tells you that due to rusted parts Etc it took a little longer. He must tell you this before the job is started. Independents are not bound by this but must be reasonable. When i had my garage i found being reasonable with customers and the 30 or 40% i made on parts kept me happy and the customers came back.

Well said Wammers. I think our friend Wall needs to find a good reliable local garage as you used to have (they should see the Range Rover and just know their going to get regular business). I wonder if the quote he got is for 2 airbags?

Don't know that, but he said one bag and an height sensor. Even for two bags the £476.00 is in my view taking the ****. Overheads in the trade are horrendous these days, but on a ramp the whole job should not take longer than two and a half hours max even allowing for anomalies. Where the second garage got £189.00 for an height sensor i do not know. The price i gave for the genuine part was from Rimmers, you don't get a lot more expensive than that, unless you go to places like P38 spares who sell after market stuff at higher than dealer prices.

why do you want to watch, do you understand fault codes, they wont mean anything to you, are you a mechanic, do you understand diagnostics, think you should just go to the other garage.
what the hell did i say wrong. Am i not allowed to try and learn about my own vehicle.
so on that i came home, stripped the back of the range rover out to give it a good clean and found a completely bald spare tyre, theres another £130.00 quid, someone pass me the razor blade.

Asking that was worse than sleeping with his wife, his daughter and buggering his son, you may have caught him out ripping you off:eek:
 
found this when i removed a piece of paneling from behind the front right rear seats. i have dvd players in the rear and presume its for them but thats a lot of wires for just 2 dvd screens. any thoughts.

I can't read all the legends but it looks reasonable to me. Is there an input marked aerial?
 
Datatek, it has, ant in and four ports.
is it possible to change a height sensor by jacking the rr up or does it need to be lifted on all fours by a garage. sorry if its a dumb question, and also with your lead and software does it actually tell you whats wrong with the eas or is it just a fault code i would not understand.

Changing a height sensor takes 10 minutes (front ones, anyway). Unplug carefully, remove heatshield (front), two more bolts for the rheostat, pull rubber part gently off ...... really, if I can do it, anyone can.

Just take it slowly and try not to break anything!
