Evening all,
Just wondering, is the 4.0 P38 auto box interchangeable with the DSE one? I know they're both the ZF HP22 but want to check there are no differences as if I do need to change mine (1996 2.5DSE) then I've seen more 4.0 boxes available than DSE's.
Also, I know the ZF HP24 is longer from the 4.6 but can you fit it into a DSE by changine the bell housing, etc and also would it need the 4.6 gearbox ECU as well or would it run with the standard DSE gearbox ECU?
Sorry if this has been covered before but having searched with the search function I can't quite find the answers I'm looking for.
Cheers,
Andy.

sorry meant to get back to you ,basically same box only thing youd need to check is valve block in parts book ,in earlier boxes they are different to suit petrol and diesel engine but in p38 been electrically controlled shouldnt need to be as gear change is done by ecu ,bell housing is straight swap

No worries fella, I didn't want to mither you on the PM. So, on the HP22 I really want to look for a newer box rather than going for one from the same age as the car currently which is 1996? With regards to the HP24, is it a realistic upgrade or am I best to just stick to replacing like for like?
Cheers,
Andy.

24 is longer in main body ,petrol boxes tend to be good as they dont get the harsh torque of diesels .its allways a diesel box you get with fault ,in fact i cant remember last time i did petrol on p38, or disco
