P38 Auto box issue

Good afternoon all.
I wonder if I could ask for some advice... for my 1999 RR P38 4.6 V8 auto,
I have a problem with the gearbox in as much as it will only pull away when I manually put it into 1st gear, once it's moving I can go up through the gearbox fine, works in D with no problem, but when I stop I have to move it back to 1st to pull away, Reverse works fine.
I have checked the gearbox oil and that is fine.
Any idea's or is gearbox sh*gged!

+1 on that. First time this happened to me was on a mk2 granada in the early 90's.
Needless to say, I couldn't afford a refurb but scrappy ones were easy to come by then.
Common fault on a lot of auto boxes.

Would some transmission fix revive it for a bit?

Nope, it's broken.

Thanks all, I have manage to source a replacement gearbox, hopefully that will be the last issue, but I have my doubts...........
