Got home from work(sunday) and whilst reversing into the drive and admiring the RR i noticed a big stain underneath it , so crawls underneath to investigate and atf dipstick pipe has a bloody tiny hole right on bend just before it goes into gearbox sump. So opens bonnet and the dipstick bracket that connects to engine has snapped and is wringling around,so ten minutes later with cable ties and insulation tape the temp repair is done.
Anyway phones up local indy today for price on new dipstick pipe,so i asks the question can i get rid of it and just put bolt into sump like the later version,he says yes around £7 for bolt and seal. Now wait for it new atf dipstick pipe not including dipstick is £95 + the dreaded :eek:.So obviously i ordered the new bolt and seal, but my question is how the fook can that price be justified? but the good news is,if it happens to you, fook off the dipstick and just stick a new bolt and seal in it instead. Rant over

I am not familiar with P38s, but could the pipe be fixed with two part epoxy, liquid metal or similar?

Pete

Not worth the hassle Pete; quicker and prolly easier to use blanking bolt & seal plus, should it ever leak onto hot zorst you'd have to abandon the motor pretty rapid!:flame2:

Get it brazed up.

stupid question but how do you check and top up the level without the dipstick?

You put the car on a ramp set handbrake. Start engine move lever through gears. Put in park. Raise ramp, undo level/filler plug. Top up until fluid flows out, replace level/filler plug. That's Land Rovers version. You of course have to get under the car in your drive and do all that. As i say a LOT easier with the dip stick. :p:p

Never even crossed my mind, getting the bolt and seal anyway but will get it repaired at my leisure so i'll refit at next gearbox filter change. Talking to a mate today about it and he reckons that land rover scrapped them on the later models because the poxy brackets kept breaking with vibration, also alot of owners were overfilling with the dipstick and so changed it to a bolt only sump on the later version.
