My car is a 1996 4.6 HSE with 91k covered. Over the last week or so the car has developed what I can only call a noise - not a whine as such, from the transmission. It appears at about 1,500 revs and above, and I can only determine that it fluctuates in tandem with the engine revs. There is no trace of the noise when revving the engine in P or N, but perhaps thats because it isn't under load.

I'm inclined to think it is more related to the gearbox input, say torque converter/input shaft. The auto oil level is clean and good, no warnings appear and the changes are all seamless, smooth and no other issues apart from this noise. Having just come on suddenly, it hasn't got any worse over a week. It isn't so much a mechanical whine, more an accompanying rasp to the tune of the engine note.

Any ideas or suggestions as to what I might look out for would be much appreciated.

I believe the petrol versions develop a problem with the flex plate attached to the flywheel, it fatigues and splits resulting in a noise like you describe. It may only be on the 4.0, but check rangerovers.net for more details.
