hi all

need your help again.

ive just purchased a 1997 p38 4.6 autobiography with 100000 miles on the clock. its a beaut! that v8 sounds amazing!!

my question is, should i put and lpg kit on it?
if so anyone know of the best type and a rough idea on price?

im in manchester if that helps with anybodys recommendations.

thanks

tony

The Rover V8 is certainly a good engine to convert.
All depends on what sort of mileage your expecting to do as to how quickly your will recoup the expense. To have a sequential system (a must IMO) professionally fitted your looking at £2-2.5K. Single point systems are cheaper but troublesome.
So are you going to see a saving? I do 20k a year in mine so i would just about recoup the cost within the first year.
Mine is a Tartarini sequential system with 95ltr tank. It was originally fitted by Autogas 1000 in Cheshire by previous owner & then serviced by F1 Automotive in Bolton & has been faultless.

Don't :(
The 4.6 is the most likely RV8 to slip liners & the higher combustion chamber temperatures when running on LPG won't do the block any favours. Having said that, if it's got to 100k without problems .........:)
You'll have to cover a lot of mileage to re-coup the conversion outlay & more kit = more potential problems.

thanks guys

ill probably only do 10000miles a year. do quite frequent trips to wales about 200 miles round trip.

what sort of mpg could i get, is there any tricks to get more efficiency??

i know they are a petrol guzzler just wondering if its worth keeping or selling on after a bit of tlc, i love the car though only had it a few days and that engine sound is quality!!!!

Fuel economy is much better on the back of a recovery truck:rolleyes:
Sell it on and get e diesel:)

The joys of V8 ownership.....

On 10k miles a year it will probably be at least a couple of years to recoup the LPG installation cost.
I can get around 17-18 MPG on a good run if i take it steady (i do a weekly trip from Sheffield to London - 330 miles on a full tank). Combined average for me is 14-15 MPG though. I pay currently 66p / ltr LPG.
Mine has done 90k on LPG so far.
With the money saved so far running LPG i can budget for a new top hat short engine if, or should i say WHEN i need to replace mine.

And the computer may be wrong, you done a brim to brim ? you may be getting less.:D:D
Oh don't get me wrong, I am more than aware of the untruthfulness of the OBC....I just snapped the picture as a fun way of saying what the joys are of V8 ownership...

Check my fuelly icons in my signature for accurate brim to brim MPGs.....and yes I do get about 3-5mpg les than the OBC says!:eek::eek:

Ecotech in Manchester are £850 for a 4 cylinder engine to give you an idea - and they do the cheapest conversion around and regularly do Range Rovers.

Gastech in Warrington are nearer £1300 for a 4 cylinder engine and refused to do one last time I was there as it had a porous block (how they knew, I've no idea).

So there's 2 companies to try...

my 4.6 does 9 mpg on lpg... taking it steady!

its a crappy single point injection thing. I dont bother with it now.

stay away from the guy at coppul he knows as much about lpg as l know about gas ovens . took it back after about 2000 miles for a setup he wasnt interested gave me a 1/2 hr slot said it was misfiring and sent me on my way. so l finished up diagnosing it myself with our fitter at work now she runs a absolute dream, trust me he knows f**k all very dissapointed.couldnt blame the car or the gas equipment its just he knows nothing only how to fit the kit after that ur on ur own

Where you are looking for LPG instalers ? for 1400 GBP you can have fitted, and your filling point will be hiden. Not like many here driled in car body ...
I will shoot someone who will drill hole in my car body.
I do average 13MPG 4.6 Gems, 20'' wheels 275/40/20
When I unplug battery its start from 9.5MPG but after a while when driving going up to 13MPG, and I like push it hard, love V8 sound, I take off midlle silencer, and weld on stright SS pipe.

Both of our P38's have been converted to LPG, with the BRC Multi point system. Cost was 2k for fitting, VAT all the extras and first service.

The MPG is about the same as with petrol, but LPG is half the cost. We've had zero problems with either LPG system, though it was installed by an LPG specialist. Get near as dammit 215miles off a tank of LPG at 51.00 to fill from empty.

You can buy just a kit ,and fit it your self, easy enough to do,I did mine myself couple years ago,you won't regret it ,700 mile round trip to derby mostly 50-70 cost around £140,

I fitted mine myself too. Used a company called Tinley Tech to buy the kit. It's a good multi point system and has never let me down in 4 years. It makes running a large V8 reasonable.

Dead easy to fit too. Took me 3 days taking it very steady.

If you do get it done you might want to consider fitting the filler point in one of the tow bar electrics holes if you don't use it. It's helpful as you can fill up from either side of the pump.

That's where I put my filler too ,in the hole next to towbar socket, can hardly even notice it,nothing worse than seeing one drilled half way up rear quarter panel,no need for it,great minds think alike eh.

+1
My filler is next to the towbar socket. Nice & easy to get to & access from both sides - which you really appreciate bearing in mind there is usually only one LPG pump on most forecorts.
