Following on from my breaking P38 thread, just trying to ascertain what would cause the following problem:

What would cause the engine to run fine when cold, but seize up, or sound like it, when hot.

Took the car down to the garage for an MOT, it had run fine whilst bedding in the new cam, for 30 minutes in the garage

It ran fine during the week whilst making sure everything was leak free etc

But that morning, put a couple of cans of fuel in it, it would not start, then took ages to get going running on 4 cylinders, then 6, finally 7. Drove it to the MOT station

On the way down to the station, it felt like it was getting better, no lights in dash, oil pressure goes out straight away, brakes worked, auto box worked.

At the station, the garage owner asked was it a special 7 cylinder model!, then whilst running on the ramps it cut out, would not start again, whilst cranking, it would turn over, then when finally starting, sounded like it was partially seizing, so shut it down, when cooled, it did the same thing

Car is being towed back this week, caring garage owner, just wondering what to check, will get the engine out, but could it be something else I have missed?

Could it be the torque converter or fuel pressure regulator dumping fuel?

Thanks

I think it's unlikely to be seizing. Once that starts to seize, it runs away very quickly and you wouldn't have time to turn it off.

Sounds like there's something wrong with the fuel you put in.

these cans of fuel? why cans, why not fresh fuel from a filling station?
how old was the petrol in the cans? was it actually petrol? not meths or paraffin?
its a big coincidence that it started right after you put it in,
oh a thought, had it run out of petrol and the canned fuel was to get it going? sometimes you can stir up whatevers sludged on the tank bottom when its run completely dry and its partially blocked the filter?

The car was not taxed, it can only go straight to the mot station and back, so bought two cans of fuel from the petrol station, fresh that day. The tank had been cleaned out and a new pump installed about three weeks ago.

The garage owner did say that there was a whoosh of air when he released the petrol cap that he had never seen before.

The car did not start straight after filling, I did not try starting it that day before adding fuel, but it took about twenty minutes to get going and ran rough from the start

Regards

Quite normal me thinks, mine does the same at each fill up which is too often ;)
