Hi. last month i had battery drain problems, due to my alarm going off constantly, and hence draining the battery. The becm was sent off and the alarm disabled, and the problem stopped. But last few days the battery has been draining. The battery seems ok when load tested, but the alternator wont charge anywhere over 13.7 volts. Am i right in saying the alternator is weak, hence battery draining slowly over time, as the alternator isnt charging up to full. Thanks, sam

I would do a specific gravity test on the battery first, just to check for a faulty cell.
I would expect 14 to 14.4 volts from the alternator at 2000rpm,but it may still be the battery.

Hi Sam
I recommend Walsh & Midgley at the top of Bull Hill in Darwen. I had similar problems on a Volvo which I'd put down to the alternator. They found it was the crimp connection on the battery dropping the voltage across it. Redid that and all was restored. Charged me next to nothing. I was impressed I wasn't shafted for a new alternator. Take it there. They'll do a full test on your battery as well as alternator and they don't charge the earth. Their batteries are pretty reasonable too should you need one. They're on 916876 or 763184.

My dads got a garage, so he has tested everything and thinks its the alt, i have put a brand new merc sprinter battery bought for his recovery on (75 ah and 650 cca) and the problem still happened. Ive used walsh & midgely before, when they were near ewood and they once sold me a faulty battery for my m3, they kept telling me it was an electrical fault, until the guy finally give in to load testing it in front of me and admitted it was a duff. Alternator has gone to ellisons now to be reconned, so will let you know the results later on, Sam

Well, there you go. I've been using them for years both when they were near Ewood and now at Darwen with no problems. Maybe it was the guy at the time. Sorry you had a bad experience there. I also use Ellisons for exchanges and rebuilds on alternators and starter motors. I've found them pretty good too. Hope you get it fixed. The main reason I took the Volvo up there was the alternator was such a tw*t to get off without dismantling half the engine bay. It's gone now anyway.

What is the cost of refurbishing and what exactly to they do to it.
Mine failed two weeks ago and I replaced it with one from Island 4x4.
Working fine now.I have the old one (orginal with date 1994) and would like to overhaul and keep as a spare.

Hi, the rebuild cost me £65 trade price, and it looks brand new! I dont know exactly what is done to it, i guess all parts that wear are replaced, new voltage regulator and its just given a general clean up and paint. Its now charging at between 14.4-14.7 volts, so now im happy. Me and my dad both use ellisons regularly for alt & starter rebuilds and they never fail to impress me with their work. Yeah maybe it was just a bad experience with w & m, im sure i will try them again in the future, Sam
