my range rover 2.5dse was doing a avrege of 22.1 over a distance of 12miles its now doing 28.8mpg. I decied to go for a staright throw custom exhaust system. It is mainfold back no boxs no resticsions plus no cat. The system has 40degrce bends and 2.5inc allway through. Plus sounds lik thunder with a real deep picth rumble. But amzinley not anoying plus i hav a 15mth old and he happyley sleeps through eney jorney. Sorry 4 spelling got very bad dislexcer

are you taking you mpg reading off the dash or by filling the tank to the brim?any fueling problems?overheating?any info on the straight through system much appreciated, cost, supplier, photo,s,etc just incase i decide to treat myself:).if accurate thats quite an improvement and by adding a psi box you could possibly be looking at a regular 30mpg 2.5 with a bit of grunt, which also scares the grannies has you drive past.i,m off now to change my underpants:D

no problems qwoted down pipe bk single exhaust with twin tips £385 or qwad tips £525 from mike stokes dorset. I went for single because cheaper and in buget. Got qwote from alli sport for psi box big core intercooler new oil cooler and air filter plus egr unit blanked £1100 which is nxt. But super chips do a custom map 170ishbhp and this only clamed by them 300ish,nm i think but lbf of tourqe would eat my gear box priced at £350 a psi box been told £460. If u hav a auto u hav a tourqe sencer it ur gear box so it can nt be dont via super chip. Hope that helped

Hi Range2.5dsemad

An interesting post from a fellow P38 fan who's also mpg conscious. I've been considering a stainless steel exhaust system recently, but your purchase looks like a potential alternative, with some nice sound effects - and cheaper! I will have a look at it.
I fitted the Rimmer Bros 'Power Box' and K&N air filter soon after buying mine (5 years ago) and get a read-out of 30mpg plus on a regular basis (up to 35 on A1 Peterborough to Leeds, now they've removed all the roundabouts!). I know these readings are suspect, and topping up the tank "brim to brim" on subsequent fills then calculating mileage is likely more accurate, but the message centre readout will show consistently in which direction your mpg is going.
Incidentally, a rather devious and difficult to spot air leak caused my mpg and power to dip (first very slightly then dramatically). It occurred in the rubber (2") pipe down at the right hand side of the engine that leads up to the intercooler. It gets manky near the engine and prone to splitting and even slipping off (but not easily detectable). It's an "L" shaped piece and can be reversed as a temporary fix (18 months ago!). Had difficulty identifying this piece (main agents) and am told that the complete length only can be purchased (including alloy tube) and costs £123! Not sure whether its standard to all 2.5 engines though, but something worth watching.

hi dougk it is only vacum activate so look for the peace on ebay if nt sum were lik hyphose they deal in hoses etc or a kit car spiler. My is fine and i fill my tank up to top and get 28.8 round town my has full service histroy and only 72k on clock. Also depens how worn ur engine is and wat miles it done. Think before diced to get exhaust sum tym can go down rather than up despends how u drive i drive in 5th gear at 30mph or under 2000rpm and now and agen up to 4000plus to clear system out. I hav been told but few friends with p38 expect 36mpg plust on a run if u hav intercooler power box/custom chip exhaust and filter so i hav been told but it an exspence of rnd £1500 for lot so would take 6years plus to pay for its self thats avrge driver.

I know it is an old post but I am thinking of going with a straight through system on my 2.5 P38 and would be very interested to hear what it sounds like and also to hear from anyone else that has done it as I am a little nervous about the noise level.

Cheers

No mods at all but runnning mix of SVO (straight vegetable oil) and tiny bit of dino diesel and get an improvement from 27.8 to 31.2, winner, perhaps with the power box, larger intercooler and straight through exhaust I could get it into the 50's mpg?

Yeah and if wishes were horses.... it would output over 500lbft! I can only dream
