Hi all I have a R reg p38 2.5 auto
It has been fine and all of a sudden she will over heat if standing ticking over, but drive flat out and she’s fine,
Checked VC working
Had new rad 8 months ago
New waster pump 8months ago
Starts off the key every time not using water
Could it be a sticky thermostat?

Not hard to whip it it out test by putting on a wire and dipping into pan of water.

What rad did you have?
rad should have baffle in it to direct water down and around, some aftermarket ones do not have the required baffle, old ones can rot out - marble test

How did you test the fan, did you use the news paper test.

+1.

Fan should roar at startup and after a few minutes settle down and go quiet. At this stage a rolled up newspaper should be able to stop it. Wait until the car starts to overheat and it should start to get louder again and this time it will shred the newspaper.

As RR DT says, rad should have a baffle. Or it could be a sticky stat etc or just an airlock. When was all this stuff changed? Try parking up a slope with nose up. Check little pipe from rad to expansion tank is free (blow down it. If your ears pop ypu need to unblock it!) and run it occasionally giving the water hoses a good squeeze. If you keep getting airlocks then check carpet where clutch pedal would be for dampness.

check all the above then I guess it's then time for a sniff test if there is no visible leaks.I had one from the heater take off pipe next to the water pump, just a very expensive O ring.
