hi someone mentioned that at a certain mileage you need to adjust the timing,could someone please enlighten me as to what the mileage is.

i won't be doing this myself but that may cure my hotstart issue,as from cold it is great,pulls well so hopefully just needs re-timing i am in oxfordshire,just in case someone feels like taking it on,for payment of coarse.

Vehicles that have covered more than 20,000 Km have a slightly different setting than vehicles below that mileage, to allow for chain stretch. Below 20,000 Km DTI reading should be 0.95mm+- .002mm. After 20,000 Km it should be 0.90mm +-002mm. Will 0.05mm make any difference to your starting? I think very little.

erm no,just a thought,but timing may be out,worth getting it checked,if not new or reconditioned injection pump.
and might even fit a new timing chain,been told these stretch,but that would be a very expensive job.
although would like to tackle it myself,your thoughts on this please.

As i said timing chains stretch that is the reason for the different setting. About £250.00 plus or so for chains tensioners and sprockets. Will it make a difference to your hot start problem. Maybe not a lot. Special tooling required for a DIY job would cost around £200.00 plus depending where you get it. Locking plate for cam, pin for flywheel, locator/extractor for pump and pump sprocket. DTI and ancillaries for timing. Or you may be able to borrow them if you find somebody with them. Not really DIY unless you are pretty clued up.
 
it is a well known fact in the bmw community that these engines timing chains can become a little slack with age
because of this the pump cannot adjust the timing for hotstart if you speak to some specialists they will tell you it is rubbish that it is the pump at fault but you need the correct dti and adaptor to adjust the pump correctly which either you wont be able to find or will have to an expensive kit that does all different types.
but after a lot of searching for a cost effective solution i have found that sealey tools do the small dti you will need part number ak9634m and the tool to screw into the pump is discontinued in this country but i have found and bought the same kit from america via ebay 370483411322 is the number these to parts cost me around £45 you will need to shorten one of the extensions in the kit by about 5mm then they work perfect!

yes i have just wondered if anyone had their diesel rangie pump adjusted,without the hotstart fix,there is a garage at oxford and eh douglas at wardington that offer this service,not sure what they do.
and it does not always cure them. but it still costs 250 pound if it works or not

Good money for a couple or three of hours work. Wish i still had my garage business. :D:D
