Hi people, i want to increase the power of my Rangie but not sure what to do... ive found a place that can re-map my N reg p38 in leeds for £250... and the psi boxes are looking around £350ish, now i thought the psi box just interupts the signals to fuel pump and ecu to increase power ect ect but the map is a "proper job" But if the map is best why is it cheaper than the tuning boxes on the market???? ive allways had other vehicals remaped but these dam p38 are a differant kettle of fish... Can any1 with a remaped or tuning box power upgrade Rangie let me no what they think since having either done... and any advice to help me lol,:doh::doh:

A couple of people on here have reported trouble with re-maps as it seems it involved piggybacking a chip or such like.

I'm very happy with the PSI Power box. Easily removable if needs be for emmissions tests (not that it has affected the emmissions on mine) or if you sell the car. Plenty of power and no risk of damaging the ECU.

Having said that, a re-map that is well done must be better, just depends how it's done and by whom.

My DSE is re-mapped it is a flying machine. But if you use the extra power gained by re-mapping or fitting a power box you will NOT be doing 35mpg around town, be warned. On a good run maybe a little saving, but stop start in traffic no way.

Hi, ive never seen 35 mpg... not even on the motoway at a constant 60 mph... ive got used to the poor fuel return and dont mind as long as it goes like the wind lol... im about to clean the inter cooler and inlet manifold, i serviced it and did ALL the oils (gearbox, transfere box, diffs) along with prop greasing, then i found my front UJ totaly knackerd with around half aan inch play, i changed it hoping that id get slightly better mpg... but nope... still ****e.:doh:

Yeah i know but that is what some people claim. Fit a power box have a re-map get much better fuel economy by injecting more fuel to get more power. It just does not work that way, use the power use the fuel, as long as you are aware of that.

Ive had my Transporter remapped and even tho i thrashed it harder it still returns me better fuel economy even when im towing customers cars and vans, but every make of engine are differant... Landrover should of thrown VW diesels in the P38s lol

Re-mapped for economy or re-mapped for power you can't have both. The only way to increase power and torque in a diesel engine without stripping it down and doing engine mods is to increase the fueling. Your talking a perpetual motion machine and they ain't been invented yet. If you have an oil lamp and you turn the wick up to get more light it uses more oil. Simples.

yeah i no what your saying but it6s true, i had it mapped for more acceleration hp and more eng torque so i could show the ****er taxi drivers and boy racers a thing or too at the traffic lights, and tow with even more ease at lower eng revs..

I am, as most of you know a dedicated petrol head. However I have come across quite a few Power Boxed P38 diesels and I must say that the results are impressive.
As my arch enemy:D:D Wammers says "You get Owt for nowt" !!

Another thing to remember is, if the occaision arises that your Insurance company decides to check your motor over after a bump and it's been remapped it could nullify your cover. If however the Power Box is conveniently removed, easily done, it's back to a basic P38 diesel

Well you know what to do now Irish mate or should i call you Moriati? Get your 4.6 chipped to produce 400bhp and do 45 mpg. Global warming sorted.

 chipping...just fit a bigger lump in and increase the size of the petrol tank......250 litres should do it.
Then I will give you "Tractor" drivers a run for your money !!!!:hysterically_laughi:hysterically_laughi

I have fitted a genuine "Superchip" to my 2000 DSE.
Not a job for the faint hearted. It involves opening up the engine ECU and unsoldering the old chip and fitting a new one - I needed help from a "Superchip" dealer.
It has transformed the car - 25% more BHP and 33% more torque. MPG is better by about 2 to 3 mpg.

As I said I have a PSI power box on mine, brim to brim it does around 24mpg locally and up to 30 mpg on a run. Much better than either of my previous 4 X 4's. For such a heavy car I think the economy is incredible and there is plenty of power when needed.
Sad bugger that I am I keep a fuel log so I know accurately what I use, helps to detect the onset of problems too.

So a power box might be better then.... i just dont understand how the psi box is sooo much more expensive as a remap...

There is more work in a power box, cables, connectors, components, packaging and of course the software. A re-map is either just a software download on modern stuff or a chip on older ECU's. It seems on the P38 ECU it is neccessary to change the program chip which in my opinion is a risky excercise for most people. On my Transit it is a simple download to effect a re-map and it can be tweaked in realtime to optimise things:D
