hi,
can anyone please tell me how to go about a front axle seal i am hoping to remove the whole stub, how do i go about this,
i am also changing air bags susupension as well, this is not as difficult as i first thought, thanks to help on this site.
thankyou to all who have helped so far.

Need to remove the hub nut, caliper (Tie up out of the way), abs sensor, brake disc & backplate.
The hub is held by 4 bolts to the swivel, good chance that the hub itself is rusted solid to the swivel as the register on the hub and swivel is a close fit. If it won't move, it's down to brute force I'm afraid. The halfshaft can then be removed and the seal replaced. Clean the hub register and swivel bore up, coat with copper grease and reassemble. coat abs sensor with silicone grease and reinsert until it touches the toothed section of the CV joint.
I can send you detailed instructions if you send me a PM with your email address.

do you need to undo top and bottom balljoints or not?
Or do they need to be undone.

Thanks for the tips here, I'm just attempting the procedure myself, it's hard work! Just wanted to ask as haven't got hub off yet but with my hands around the CV Joint gaitor (which is a bit worse for wear) I can shift the axle back and forth. Is this play normal or is it just another reason for mevto replace the seal?

Many thanks

Well after lots of bending a few broken bits and plenty of frustration, finally got my hub nut off! Used a tip about putting the hub nuts half way in before giving them a bash thereby easing the hub off.

Half shaft is out too and I can now look at my CV joint, if I hold the CV joint and pull the half shaft I get a bit of play back and forth, hoping that is normal? Looking at changing the gaitor, anyone able to advice how to take the CV joint off the half shaft?

Thanks

The CV joint is retained on the halfshaft by a split spring ring clip.
After removing the clips securing the gaiter, slide the gaiter along the halfshaft out of harms way. holding the halfshaft in a vice and keeping the CV joint in line, give the CV a sharp clout with a soft faced hammer away from the halfshaft. You will see that the clip should remain in the groove on the splined end of the shaft. Refit is reverse, there are large chamfers on the end of the splined inner part of the CV which causes the spring clip to collapse when it is inserted...likewise, when you remove the CV, the chamfer on the inner face compresses the clip.

Wow thanks for that detailed reply, I'll give this a shot. Is the play in the CV joint anything to worry about?

Thanks
