Hi all,

I have a 2010 4.4 TDV8 and I had my DPF cleaned after getting the red DPF Full error come up and restricted mode. I got the DPF cleaned (fully by cutting exhaust and putting it through a DPF cleaner), when driving home it went in to restricted mode, went back to the garage and it came up as code P042D which apparently is a catalyst sensor (Bank 1 sensor 2). I've cleared the code myself a couple of times but it just keeps coming back so off the road now until fixed. I just wondered if anyone has had similar, especially after a DPF issue. I'm wondering if, now DPF is clean, the exhaust gases are flowing through and maybe the sensor already had an issue, if so I'll jut get that sensor replaced. Just interested on any advice and if anyone had similar issues with the Catalyst sensor ? Thanks

I guess you should have changed that sensor a while ago instead of clearing it. Maybe that made a mess of your dpf system.

What is you average driving? I.E do you mainly drive around town or do you have some good runs?

My driving normally is half hr back roads to work and back and then longer drives once or twice a week up to an hr, trouble is during covid it's been sat still and not done many long journeys ! The DPF full was the first issue, the P042D is a new issue that's only happened directly after the clean :(
 
I would go for a new sensor then, after checking that they haven't disturbed the wiring to it while doing the DPF work;). Cats are close to DPF loads of wires and stuff:eek::)

Not using it during COVID should not have made any diff. Did they see any other fault codes? there could be other reasons upstream of that sensor (guess) knowing the complexity of the beast:eek::)
You need to keep a constant speed for a certain time to get the DPF to regenerate (well our 2011) They dont like driving around at town speeds for months.
Do you have have live reading on your diagnostics it could help as you can see live data, It can tell alot more than just seeing a fault code.

Thanks for the above info, I'll check it out :) I was hoping my ODB2 device would give me all the info i need but it doesn't appear to have the sensor 2 temps and voltage info, I've thought about buying another one that also has the DPF soot level info but no idea which ones would have all that info, currently looking in to as would be good to have more info. I'm not getting any more codes apart from P042D although started the car today and got the amber DPF full but must be a red herring as just had it cleaned and not driven it more than 20 miles so assume it's all related. I'm leaving it my garage can get me in and check it all out and replace sensor, then will give it a good run out !
 
pretty sure our IID gap shows that info, would need to check your year is covered.

I decided to take it out for a drive and keep clearing the P042D codes whilst driving to try and get it to regen and clear the amber DPF full message before the garage take it in to look at it. Drove it for a while, cleared the errors apart from the amber DPF full and kep the speed correctly on long stretches of road .... then it went to the RED DPF full message !! I give up, in to garage Wednesday to be looked at, can only assume the DPF messages are red herrings as it was only cleaned 20 miles ago so I'd like to think it's like new now. I'll update what happens, thanks for the helpful replies, much appreciated :)
 
Update to issue:
So, took the car to my mates garage (he doesn't have the flashy DPF machine so couldn't do that), he got his expensive ODB2 reader on to it and it was showing 41g of soot !!!! Now I've just paid over £600 to have the whole thing cleaned so a bit miffed that it was showing 41g of soot in there, I'd only driven 20 miles maximum since then, maybe using it in restricted mode caused it to fill quickly but my mat said not 41g worth ! Anyway, he removed the exhaust and ran some stuff through it himself to try and help it, then put the exhaust back on and took it for a drive whilst connected to his reader, after a long while the soot level went down to a level where a regen could take place, which then brought the soot level down to 3g. This then cleared any warning lights, no restricted mode and he opened it up and booted it a bit. So currently soot levels ok, the P042D sensor error didn't reappear, he ordered a new sensor but said when he looked at it there was nothing wrong with it so suspects all related to the DPF. I don't know what to make of the garage that charged me all that money for the DPF clean, maybe it didn't work properly but they did remove the exhaust and they did put it through the expensive DPF clean machine (they even showed me the system and the mess that came out). They didn't tell me the soot levels before and after, they did a static regen (I thought you shouldn't do that on my model) and they didn't drive the car to give it a test out to ensure all was ok ! Anyway, I've not been out in it yet but I'm hoping all is ok now and at the very least hopefully the DPF clean machine got rid of all the ash that would have built up over the 150 thousand miles the car has done ! Thank you for all the help and advice given, appreciated :)

Thanks Mark, I've not driven it yet so it's not over yet ;) But I hope the dreaded restricted mode stay away now and I can get back to enjoying my lovely car, had it 2 and a half years and completely trouble free until this happened, I know I've been lucky overall :)

Hi - I'm dealing with the same issue on my L322 at the moment. Had two of the sensors replaced but Amber DPF is back on. Has yours been OK since? Ta. Steve
