overland in a p38 diesel!!!

a friend of mine is setting up a overland travel company and wants to use p38 rangerovers, what are you opinions on this, i told him that i thought he was mad and should use something else:doh::doh::doh::doh:

You dont say where he is going? anywhere in europe should not be a problem
anywhre further afield, probably not the best choice due sophistication of vehicle and they are all getting a bit long inthe tooth not agood combination , with old you need simple JMHO

he will be going from london to bangkok and back.

yes this is great as i read it when you first posted it.

It's a lottery, you could drive a rangie to the moon and back and have no problems.... but break down with a serious electrical/ecu problem in low earth orbit and you are screwed...

whereas any bush mechanic who lives in low earth orbit can fix a defender... it will be a good story though hearing how he got home if did have a serious problem...

yes i tried to tell him that and even consider a landcruiser as they seem to be everywere, well they were where we went anyhoo.

I dont see what considering a l/c does for the chap as they break just the same, and are now as tech complicated as other 4x4 , a guy I know had to leave his in malaysia and come home as they could not get the parts , it followed him back later in a BOX JMHO

That worries me. If I was to set up an overland company the P38 would not be very high up on the list at all.

I guessed that...but the P38 is a bit of an in-betweener. Those wanting to go in something more upmarket, will choose a company that has new(or ish) LandCruisers or Disco 3/4...those wanting the more rugged approach will choose a company with Defenders.

Yes I also know people like that, think the scientific term for them is stupid Well it is bound to be hysterical seeing how an expedition led by someone with no common sense turns out

You are right there! I just don't trust this air suspension and electrickery stuff which can fail - I like to know where I stand with a vehicle when I am in the middle of no where.

the trips are going to be one way and at the end sell the vehicles and ship the equipment back to the uk.

Prep a vehicle and then sell it when they get there? I am confused at that business model!

Apart from Dumbass I have just one word for your buddy, Carnet de Passage...... or is that three words

depends were you go in asia as some places you dont need a carnet, and please bear in mind he has been a overland driver in asia for the past 9 years and knows it like the back of his hand, also you can get the vehicle removed from your passport in bangkok, happy days for me as he want me and the missus to go with him.
