overheating

Rad flush, you chuck in the top of the rad and run the engine for a few minutes, its meant to clear any blocks in pipes and radiator. The only problem with this is that it can cause leaks in the radiator fins if any are suspect anyway.
Easiest thing to do would be to take off one pipe and flush through then work systematically through the engine and rad doing the same. That way in theory you should find if any, blocks or problems with cooling system.

I don't want to give up quite yet but I have been down the road tonight an the temp guage was up on the red line in 3 miles. Before i went out I cracked open the bolts on the thermostat housing - I started the engine and water was coming out of the crack at some pressure. Seems to me the water pump is working. When I got home the coolant pipes were hot at the top and the bottom. I thin it may be time to take it to the garage.

I have also noticed that the exhaust manifold has a crack which I think explains the blowing... If the worst comes to the worst I will start again with a recon Series engine - I have seen a few for sale - what would be the cost to fit?

The ggod news is that overall the Landy seems good. Chassis seems OK but there is some rot painted over in the foot wells - that may be an issue in the future. It is one I want to keep but it may be sensible to cut me losses and start with a decent motor....

When it got hot - was the radiator hot all over - or were there cold spots - indicating a blocked radiator. The Essex V6 is a good lump - try and stick with it if yu can. Of course it could be that the temp sensor in the block doesnt match the series gauge - thats a common problem - as is the voltage regulator going down. I would be inclined to try and get an independent temperature measurement - to see if it IS running hot - or just saying it is!

Yeah, I don't want to change the engine - there must be a cheaper fix - and as you say, it is a good motor.

I didn't check for cold spots. I will try some rad flush and try going for a drive again. ... then see if this helps and check for cold spots...How do I get an independent temperature measurement?

I had a similar prob with an old perkins engine, i chased an over heating problem for days, eventually got the hump with it and left it ticking over with the rad cap off and a thermometer stuck in the rad. Turned out the temp sender wasnt compatible with my landy.. Just ignored it from then on.

If your a bit posh you could get an infa red thermal thingy which you point the red dot at and it reads the temp? to modern for my series 1.

I hesitate to say all is OK but it looks like it might be. I bought a two part rad claeaner and followied the instructions - this mornign have been for a run and the temp is right in the middle of the guage...

Yesterday when I got home the temp was at the top of the red on the guage. I felt the rad and it was only hot at the top and the bottom corner. Seems that this was my problem - blocked radiator. The cleaner appears to have done its job and all is OK.

Many thanks for everyones help and suggestions - I would have given up otherwise and taken it to the garage.

So that's the overheating sorted, the alternator is fixed. Now I need to sort out the blowing exhaust manifold, then an engine tune, then the clutch then the rust.....

I remember seeing your landy on ebay. It did look good and I would have given the bloke a grand for it unseen. From how you've described it since collecting it I'd have ben a bit ****ed off considering it was described as "restored", considering what you paid for it. Hope you get it all sorted, I'm sure it'll be a good un once you do.

Yeah - 'Restored' was somewhat misleading. Having said that, I have paid £42 for a recon alternator and £10 for a radiator flush and it is now running well.

Whoever did it up seems to have done a nice job in places and then been a bodger elsewhere. With the underseal he has sprayed over mud in places !
I think £2,000 was over the top for it and I probably do have cause to be disappointed but hopefully it will prove to be a good un.

It's just part of the rocky road of Land Rover ownership! I bought my !!0 off ebay and there were a few things that the bloke had forgot to mention. It's basically a good un though so I'm happy really. I think all Landies are an ongoing project anyway
