right ive got a 98 p38 auto 4 ltr with LPG conversion 112k miles

ive recently (yesterday) had to go up a very steep lane (tarmacked) to access a farm house where some friends were staying. the rangie was doing fine until i can across a couple of cars going down the hill. a few reverses and manoeuvres later i was past but the temp had gone through the roof and the red over temp warning light was on.

i pulled over and then the usual steam came out and coolant out of the overflow pipe due to it boiling away.

i let i cool down and luckily had 2 litres of water in the car. topped it up and carried on up the hill. stopped again when the temp got high. carried on .... stopped..... carried on.... etc until i reached my destination (total trip from first stop to farm house less than a mile).

reached the farm house let it cool down all the way and then topped up the reservoir. ran the engine for a little and let it cool down and re checked the reservoir. all good. checked the reservoir and there was still a blue coloured liquid in the tank.

this was in Wales. id driven to Wales on LPG from Kent via Heathrow all fine not a fault in sight. i drove home 30 mins after incident from Wales via Heathrow all fine not a fault in sight.

what caused the overheating on the hill??. i was in gear 1 and 2 in the high range and running on lpg up the hill. im thinking that my baby didnt like being told to go up hill on lpg and in 1st or 2nd (high range). any thoughts ??

cheers

frosty

ps i love my P38

You've probably got a leak somewhere where you are leaking coolant.

Check the radiator and pump first for leaks. Then the interior below the heater matrix for wetness. If you can't find anything conclusive, you'll need to have it pressure tested.

BTW, if you are using LPG all the time, it's going to end badly.

wslr why do you say if i run on lpg all the time it will end badly..??

i am planning to drive to the alps next weekend .......

Sorry, but you either love it or hate it and I'm in the latter party.

LPG isn't petrol. It doesn't have the same properties. It wasn't designed to be used as the primary fuel for the RV8. So PLEASE spend some time driving it on petrol, otherwise you'll be shortening the life of the V8 unit.

I'd put your trip off 'till you've found the leak. Otherwise make sure you have both excellent euro recovery AND insurance covering stays in hotels.

Sorry, but there are time where I have to be blunt about things like this.

update......

ive removed the side panels drivers side (RHD vehicle) and removed and instected the drivers foot well vent. ive dried coolent on the inside of the vent.

im hoping that it is the O rings that are the cause of the coolant leak. im going to get myself a set tomorrow and replace them.

is there anything else i should be looking at?
