As Kwakerman suspected with mine, I wonder if your gauge or sender is faulty?
I have 2 gauges and did suspect this, but both read the same. So I installed a new sender. Still hot. This was the turning point where I started to pull 1/2 the front of the engine off.
Which (like all jobs on old Defenders) grows legs.
Having exposed the P gasket I could see the front of the engine, behind the water/steering pump carrier was manky.
So I sprayed liberal amounts of GUNK, ruined the washing up brush (that impressed her indoors ....) and cleaned it all off with my pressure washer.
Looks nicer, I thought. Tidy.
Later on I noticed a red stain on the floor. Closer inspection shows that the PAS pump is weeping. The only think I can think of is the there was some silicon/hardened grime sealing the front half and I blew it away with the washer.... So today's job is to get the pump off, clean it up and reseal it - or if that looks like it might be to difficult, buy a new/reconditioned one.
