Hi all, Can anyone tell me why my N reg 300tdi Auto overheats when towing - only on uphill sections. The gauge heads upwards towards the red however there is no loss of water from the system. I have recently had a new cylinder head put on and it has been running like a dream. No problems with the vehicle overheating when I am not towing. Whats the problem please???

Sounds like yeh radiator is caked up!Either externaly or internaly, take front grill off, blow through with an air linen or power wash.Internaly try flushing through with a hose pipe.If that dunt work it's knacked!!

FFS Heidi...........& any really hot spots indicate that you are off to A&E for a skin graft.

I'd do it when it's warm, not when you've just been towing up a long hill, on the motorway.

I have had the same problem in the past, towing up those never ending mountain roads in the Scottish Highlands. However, I've not had a problem since removing my EGR valve. I don't know whether it's removal was relevant, but it may just be worth looking at.

I`m really intrested in this post, currently have overheating TD5 (may be water in fuel)about to go towing in a weeks time and have an unfitted egr plate that I want to fit this weekend but won`t incase it adds to my problems.

Removal of the EGR valve CAN only ease your problems:)
Get rid-NOW! Easy job, have you got the kit or just the plate?

If you are over heating you want to be looking at air lock in the coolant system or blockage, leaks, blocked radiator (internaly/externaly) and worse case scenario head casket!

Hi mate
have you checked your viscous coupling on your cooling fan, Should spin freely when cold and lock fan mechanism up when hot, Try spinning the fan when engine hot AFTER SWITCHING OF ENGINE the fan should not spin freely
hope this helps;)

thanks all for my help,i have the full egr kit, oval plate and metal tube on square base, i have no little bung/stopper but told small bolt and clip would do. i will fit this weekend and also take off rad to flush through.
