When I rebuilt my S3 last year I took off a overdrive unit (fairy). It looked in pretty good shape.

I removed it due to me running a stage 1 rear axle and RR diff. My thought process was stronger drivetrain overall.

My S3 has a lot more power than standard, and so far gearbox is taking it ok..

However I was thinking on refitting it.... Has anyone got any idea's how I would check what condidtion the over drive unit is in....

...And how robust they are when putting loads more power through them?

an overdrive will take any amount of power but lots of torque will kill it hence the advice on not using it in 1st or 2nd......(I use mine in 2nd all the time running a 200 di)....dont know what you mean by 'lots more power' but if you use it as a 5th gear its pretty much unbreakable

Usualy they are ok aslong as they have had oil in them. The only thing that usualy goes in the is the drive gear in the front the teeth lose the edge and they wont engage or u lose drive
