Over heating problem

I think you can pick up a new one for about £90.00. Fitting a seconhand unit which might save you money could turn out to be knackered and blocked anyway.

This would not be so bad if it did not steer you into thinking you now have a good rad and you start looking elsewhere for the problem and start chasing your ar*e.

cool so lets say after fitting a new rad, thermostat, and pump it still over heats i guess its going to be a cylinder head?? if so what can i do to pre empt it going.
 
just a side note, but the last rad i pulled out was on a 200tdi disco and i didnt have to touch the fan to remove the rad. undid the metal 'frame' that is around the rad (top piece right off and 2 side pieces off) then the rad came straight up and out. maybe i was just lucky??

It is possible but the fan cowl gets in the way of the hoses and the fan cowl fouls on the fan during removal, unless the one you worked on had no cowling? Other than that I could be wrong but then I have not had a cowl/vc fan on mine for over two years, let us know how you get on it will then help others in the same situation.

unfortunately i cant remember if there was a cowl or not, but i remember there didnt need to be much space due to the rad coming almost straight up in the air to get it out. i did struggle with the bottom hose tho, i do remember that much!!

Has the rad got damaged or rotten fins ? bottom left hand side ? putting a hose through the rad wont clear blocked tubes as they will be solid. It would need both the end tanks taking off & the tubes gently sworded to remove the crap then flushed through after.
 
yes oggy, bottom left there's a small area with bent fins..
but has always been like that and never overheated....

I havent had any time to start the job, but just 5 min ago I went out to put some wd40 on the thermostat bolts (hoping they wont snap when I undo them) and using a torch on the inside of the rad, there's no light coming to the front, on close inspection....there's still loads of mud between the fins...
the surface looked clean, but inside is still a mess...therefore the reason why it's overheating?

i think I'm going to start with a good clean on the rad with a small wire and a gentle pressure washer...
leave the rad in place and just take the hoses and inspect and clean...

Blocked fins was the FIRST answer to the original post!:doh:

I know Dave.. they just looked clean to me....
only yesterday when it was dark outside i was able to properly look at it...
but even with the blocked fins I'm goin to carry out all the checks and cleaning.. :)
 
I have a similar problem, i've changed the water pump and thermostat and it still overheats on the motorway, from the front the rad looked ok, but when i took it out so i could get a better look at the back, without the fan in the way i discovered my probelm, might be worth whipping yours out? I checked my coolant system with a pressure tester prior to do this BTW to confirm the headgast wasn't leaking.

Well, im going to start cleaning the rad in a bit, so far I've adapted a byro on the end of my garden hose so I have a small jet of water that can go through between the fins..

hopefully that and a small wire will be able to clean between the fins...might take some time though..lol
 
well.. today I managed to clean the rad properly!
there was still mud (loads) between the fins, so as I said above I adapted a byro to go on the end of the hose pipe gun so I had a precise jet of water... worked brilliantly...
just point, watch all the water and mud come back to the front until the point where the water jet was just running right to the other side of the rad...
