Yes I've done a search and read some similar posts, but after some more opinions

Towing big heavy trailer resulted in head tank splitting in middle join section - think the pressure release cap failed to release pressure. It was low on water so topped up and continued, as tank was letting water out regularly stopped to top up.
On way home with no trailer it was getting hot again so pulled onto hard shoulder and topped water up, got back in and it was on the red line so killed the engine and as I did it went pop. Assumed head gasket and was recovered home.

Investigated further day and found a sensor on top of the engine had come apart - maybe result of the pop? Not sure what this sensor is - on top next to head bolts right hand side of rocker cover, but i replaced it with one off Mark L's spare engine. Also replaced my Header tank. Test drove it today and it was still getting too hot and pressurising the header tank, it also seemed to be loosing water but this could just be through being pressurised or lack of water in radiator when I topped up the header tank, on the drive home I left the cap off the header tank and it through water out everywhere.

There doesn't appear to be any water in the oil so I'm reluctant to believe it is the head gasket yet.

The radiator is in poor condition and only seemed to be getting warm in the middle it is on the replace list.

From what I've read it might be the thermostat?

What about water pump? What are the symptoms of that going?

The pipes were all very hot and I could hear a boiling sound from the engine area.

Suggestions please :)
 
thermostat works if top hose gets hot ,you could try a sniff test ,water level rising in expansion tank ,remove head and look for staining around fire ring to water way

My suggestion would be to fix what you know is bust, like the radiator, first then move on to stuff that might be working properly ...
 
when my hg went no oil mix, what it was doing was firing it out the exhaust. Head was warpped, which allowed coolant to escape. Mine would be chucking water out the header tank within 30-40 seconds of being started even from cold. I would have to go with jm and get a sniff test done.

What kind of smell am i sniffing for? It smells ok... but, i'm not an expert on engine sniffing!

(New radiator on order too)
 
as paul d said,why dont you try new rad ,check for coolant leaks ie p gasket at back of alternator then test drive it, then look at new head gasket etc
 
Right, radiator replaced and problem area found... a bit of help identifying what is f**ked would be appreciated though!

It's below the thermostat, (alternator on the left, exhaust manifold on the right) it seems to be the gasket which joins the whole timing case etc. to the engine, but, i can't imagine there should be lots of water in there?

An idea of what gasket it is and if it is a major job, i really don't have any time at present, so, if its semi-involved it'll be off to a garage of some description. :(

p gasket ,it seals main water gallery from pump to block ,youy can lay alternator still wired up to one side carefully ,remove pas pump and housing ,the 3 long bolts going through water pump lower end can snap off so be careful with those 3
 
What he said ^^^^ defo looks like the P gasket is fecked, do a google search and you'll find a photo guide, did mine a while back, easy enough, even for me :)

When you buy the gasket make sure it's a metal one anorl.
 
Excellent thanks guys - probably explains why my rev counter went spazzy and is currently dead too!
 
:confused:Hi, Have you done the p gasket etc yet, just wondering if it sorted the problem as mine just done the same thing today in all the heat!
Wouldn't mind but went on a long journey to buy a winch bumper and nearly killed the old girl in the process!
 
Yes, I did it Saturday night, as said, it is a straight forward job to do (see the How To section at the top for an excellent guide) I also replaced the water pump and radiator whilst i was at it (Radiator was in a bad state and water pumps are dirt cheap so did it whilst it was stripped down)

It's solved the problem perfectly.

Have a look at the engine behind the alternator (as in my picture) - if you have the staining there it needs the P-gasket changing

Bugger :(

Hit the read line on the temp gauge again on route to work, despite all test runs showing it happy, no water around P gasket so that's ok now. There was a lot of pressure / air in the system, it was pumping out water + air for ages when I undid the expansion tank cap.

It's fine if I take it easy, but, sat at near 60 for a period of time seems to cook it.

Is this starting to look like head again? I can't see how so much air is getting into the system otherwise
 
You won't want to hear this but a cracked head can cause pressurization and resultant water loss?
