My question is: I was driving home (disco td5 01) last night when I was very close to empty in fuel, I filled up as soon as I could, and soon afterwards ( about 15mins) I noticed a loss of power, I put this down to possible fuel block/ dirt etc, however a short time afterwards (10 min) I noticed that my engine was running very hot, pulled over and then noticed that I was lossing coollent, are these related? I've limped home (towed) and notice my car is without all coolent now. Can I assume this was just a thermostat problem and not connected to this first issue of loss of power, or are they connected, what is the fault?? how do I fix it please? Thanks.

Going by my own experience of my 2001 TD5, loss of power is the Get Me Home Mode possibly that happens when they overheat and not fuel related. mine ended with a new H/gasket. there are simple checks you canb do after refilling coolant, check for white smoke at the rear, oil in water etc other than the obviouse visible pipe blown somewhere but by the age of the car its looking like the HG to me.

Sorry mate, but good luck all the same. Loads of threads on here

where were you losing coolant from? The loss of power is definately due to the overheating as the TD5 goes into limp mode. The thermostat has 2 valves so it is extremely unlikely that both failed at the same time.

Thanks guys! I've filled the coolent back up, ran the engine for an hour observing to see if any leaks etc, and it apears to be now running fine. No white smoke, temp stays at middle level, and nothing out of the ordinary. Do you still think it might be HG? could it just be a sticking themo?

Yes the head gasket could still be gone. Mine didn't kick out any steam out the exhaust or mix the oil and water. It didn't overheat either. It just kept overpressurising the coolant system which resulted in blown hoses.

I did over 3000 miles with my HG gone. I could do a 100 mile journey with no probs and then it would over pressurise on a local 10 mile run.

I drove to Basingstoke, did a days laning (engine running most of the day) and drove back with no probs during this time anorl.

Oh bugger!

a thermostat should only fail in the open postion so that should not have caused it have you checked the coolant pump? i would take out the thermostat and either change it there about £4 Or put the old one in a pan of hot water and see if it opens as the water gets hot

They are £15 twin valve thermostats on TD5's

thanks everyone, I'm gona order and change the stat, i think Rimmer bros do a good version. After reading all the views of those who have gone through this, it seems that the HG if not already out, is on its way out. I'm gona do some research into how to change this, is there a good DVD out there that shows how to do this? do you need to scim a Td5 head?

good luck.. I am mid (almost) way through doing the HG on my V8.. and have been for a week now.. starting to do my head in ... the feeiling of satisfaction once I'm done is gonna be worth it though..

I understand that the TD5 head can't be skimmed, or at least shouldn't be, as it is a heat treated item.
