Over drive or not series 3 109

Am thinking about fitting a overdrive to my 109 station wagon has any one had experience with the products Available if so any advice would be welcome

Definitely !

You might look at the Roamer Drive from Global Roamer Corporation. Can be engaged or disengaged in any gear while driving. Not cheap though.

cheers will investigate i am restoring my 76 sw and use it as main vehicle so think might stomach the cost i will let you know how i get on

I think I will eventually add one to the 109 my brother and I recently purchased. I have been thinking that driving around in stop and go down traffic with a non-synchro first gear is going to be tiresome. Perhaps one could start out in Low Range 2nd then shift easily to 3rd, 4th and finally 4th overdrive. That should give enough speed for city driving I would think.

The reason I had in my mind was longer journeys on trunk roads etc I intend to do some long runs this year and applying overdrive should improve overall performance I find the four gears fine for town driving just try and avoid first gear by judging traffic flow

Hi there and welcome! Remember overdrive is there to reduce engine revs and save fuel, not a mechanism to go faster

Exactly cuts down on noise and ware on drive train has any one got experience with a 109 with overdrive fitted

Not a 109 but my dad's lightweight has an overdrive. You notice the lower revs a bit and a bit less noise

it does improve top end and dropping down from hi over drive to lo is a better gear change than 4th to 3rd pre corner or other such ,overdrive makes a series transmission much more useable

Good point about judging traffic flow to avoid need for 1st gear. I would like to take the 109 on long highway drives as well and keeping the RPM down would be good.

I will let you know how it pans out but be honest it will work the only thing needed with a 3 is a leg up with trunk road running apart from that a perfect vehicle

I had an overdrive on my Series 3. It was the best modification for a series Landy and made driving it much better with a noticeable increase in fuel economy too.

cheers plan to do it in next few months will post results ... First step is sourcing a romer overdrive looks straight forward but we will see.

Hi all, sorry not been on here but been a strange year - now seem like i am full time into restoration landrover series 3 109 ( my love) and old mowers (only sit on ones no younger than 1979) am now back working on sarge ( my safari) and am now working on creating a wiring loom for our 109 including trailer and auxiliary take-off, with additions, already fitted electronic distributor, and high-density coil, which has improved performance considerably - was a bit of problem-solving to get optimized!. Also added high amp alternator and heavy-duty starter motor ( starts first time even in this weather...)
Also designed and printed a center dash insert with radio and glove box along with rev counter ( which is for when fitting overdrive figure it will be helpful) all in car-line to the speedo etc.
I could buy loom but figured I would end up adding additions plus some of the routes taken by loom are a bit problematic for maintenance, reason saying all this has anyone got advice on material suppliers, as want to keep to original wire specs as much as possible. plus any pointers on the project ts already done.
