Hi all,
I have a 2003 TD4 2.0 auto freelander. I can't get the car into reverse at all. Had someone come out and run diagnostic on it and it says outward speed sensor. Trouble is, I have no idea whether it just needs cleaning or a new sensor. I had a mechanic look for one and he says he can't find one. Is there anyone in the Sevenoaks area of Kent that could help me out please?

When was the fluid changed?
There is an issue with these gearboxes where infrequent fluid changes causes the reverse brake band to wear prematurely, which makes it slip. Sometimes you might feel a tiny jolt when engaging reverse, but not always. Unfortunately a worn reverse brake band means the gearbox needs repairing, or replacing.

I think the sensor is a red herring, as this gearbox after about 2003 doesn't have one.

Indeed, hence the question. ;)
Hi there all thanks for replying. I only got the car in February and 2 weeks after is when the problem appeared. Is there a possibility of me getting fluid changed and it sorting it? Cheapest of options to try first if worth doing?

If it was ok, and subsequently stopped working without a fluid change, then I suspect that the reverse brake band has worn it's friction material out, or the piston has split, both of which does happen with these gearboxes.
There's generally no point in doing a fluid change in this instance, as the damage has been done.
A rebuild or repair by an automatic gearbox specialist is the only way to fix it.

Thanks for your reply. Appreciated. I am trying to find someone in my locality that is willing to help out. Anybody in Kent?
