Having replaced the high pressure pump, I was all nervous about firing up the old lady. SO you can imagine my disappointment when I turn the ignition key and get a high speed ticking noise and nothing else.

I am worried it is something I have done, but given the ticking noise stopped after about 10 seconds and all the lights went on the dash would suggest the battery is dead.

I have connected up my Mum's Corsa in an attempt to jump start the car, but it still ticks and the same happens after about 10 seconds. Just goes completely dead.

Apologies for all of these questions with regards to trying to get the hp pump replaced.

Is it most likely that the battery is too flat to even be jump started and the only option I have is to put it ion charge overnight?

Thanks

This is very interesting. I did as the Haynes manual suggested and connected the earth from the donor vehicle to the engine mount of the TD4 and I got nothing. SO I decided to ignore the manual and wire battery to battery. Hey presto vehicle starts. I assume the earth connection to the engine was poor, but just curious as to why they do not do earth to earth on the battery.

If you connect the earth to the dead battery you're liable to get a spark as you connect. This can either ignite any petrol fumes or mess-up both cars' electronics.

When you put the starter back in after the HP pump change, have you got a good connection on the earth strap that goes onto the starter motor bolt ? as have seen this problem due to a poor connection. Just a thought.
