If you think the heater matrix is dodgy, why remove the engine ???????????
I suppose you could inspect the exhaust manifolds for cracks, check and replace faulty oil seals and gaskets, check the water pump and clean the sump out. All depends on the mileage and general condition really.

if you mean the matrix o-rings it dont matter if the engine is in or out its still a pain, plus with no coolant you wont know if you have tightened the screw enough to stop the leak just to do it again if your heavy handed putting the engine back in and hitting the heater pipes,if your refitting the same engine steam clean it
