Jusr playin' with a Windoze machine, did an 'auto update'...

Installing "Malicious Software Removal Tool" - is this something which
checks that you only have Micciesoft products on your computer? Can
almost imagine it saying something like "Oi Firefox! Feck off!"

It does just what it says on the, er, tin: looks for software you most
depend on and (maliciously) removes it.

I think it removes TIN too, if it finds it.

Regards,

Simonm.

PS: Only joking. I still want Bill gates to have my babies*, or at least pay
for their upbringing. No they're not his. Does that matter to anyone? Fine
then.

*Two teenagers and a nine-going-on-ninteen vamp. Who _wouldn't_ want Bill Gates
to pay for theirs?

Its nothing to worry about, just Bill at microsoft helping to protect your
computer.

'The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks computers
running Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for infections by
specific, prevalent malicious software-including Blaster, Sasser, and
Mydoom-and helps remove any infection found. When the detection and removal
process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome,
including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed.

Microsoft releases an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of
each month, and as needed to respond to security incidents. You can run the
tool from this Web page anytime or download it to your computer.'

It's an emergency fix for the latest gaping hole in Windows "security",
aka Windows.

Shame on you! I thought you were supposed to be a techie? That's the
equivalent of installing a RAV-4 in your garage..

Get thee behind me satan..

As for the removal tool, it's supposed to remove nasty wide-spread
worms if you have any (on the computer), it won't remove things like
spyware which grab your credit card details, as these are mostly
installed willingly with the agreement of the end-user, so Microsoft
risks lawsuits from the companies responsible for the spyware if they
remove it.

What do you mean you didn't agree to the spyware? Don't you *read*
those End User Agreements that pop up when you install the latest
whizz-bang piece of software?

Tsk tsk....

quite possible. Actually, I imagine it's a trojan hunter, but if it's
MS-originated than it almost certainly doesn't work.

Personally, give the track record, I decline to let MS software have
anything to do with security on my machines.
