Location
near big mountains and lots of mud
after spending 7 hours in it today,i covered just shy of 400 miles, trip should have been 6 hours 20 mins but traffic coming from England into Wales was horrific spent ages in a traffic jam on the way back in Ross on wye

anyway bad points its bloody noisy
the rumbling bearing type noise was horrific at m way speeds increasing dramatically with speed,am convinced its wheel bearings,uj,s or prop bearings,at the moment the old defender is much quieter on a run ,also i am sure the front wheels screeched on full lock while pulling away earlier, but could not replicate it again ,just would not do it,also my leg went numb after 2 hours driving, dont get this with the defender, probably because its a higher seat

plus points, pulls really well, though i would expect this out of the M47 engine ,very lively, able to keep up and outpace most,it also handles really well and give about 44mpg,sound system is good

sounds like u enjoyed driving it, apart from the horrible noise

soon as u get the prop off u will then at least be able to eliminate the wheel bearings and go from there as the other guys have said , ref diff, vcu bearings, prop bearing etc if the noise stops after removing it, etc

once thats gone expect u will find it alot nicer to drive and suprised how quiet they really are

always found the seats really comfortable, just altered the lumbar support

know there not as hardy as a fender but they are nice on the motorway and handle like a car and not a 4x4

just refitted my re chipped synergy box on mine and really brings the engine alive , flat spots are gone, dont know if u had one fitted on the rover

setting mine up to have a dashboard switch , going to use a carling on\ off switch so it will blend in with the interior , will be pushed out for eco and pushed in for power

the rear diff by the way if u wish to change the oil need an oil sucker,no drain plug, got one from machine mart so can suck the oil out and refil it

the ird filler plug by the way is normally extremely tight and need a bar on it

hope im not telling u what u already know mate

imagine u was relieved also with regards to not having to fill it up every 5 mins , lol

yes LOL also relived it did not break down though i do have faith the defenders always got me home, there both landys LOL,agree prop needs to come off ,my rover had a x power upgrade plus a tuning box,but the freelander feels just as lively

Tratterer complaining about rattles/noises. :pound:

I bet yer pig prefers the Freelander.

Yeh, sort that bearing and the Freelander's a decent quiet motor. Comfort is different things to different people (probably different bodies!). Overall, for me, I think the driving position in my old Discos was probably a bit more comfortable than the Freelander for long journeys - but very very little in it!

I find freelander very comfortable to drive - way better than defender.

Couple of points,.

Only time been let down is fuel pump. That may if lucky limp you home, or just not start at all.

On old car get steering/wheels re-aligned. That makes driving much harder if its 'out'

Have had a couple of sets of prop/vcu support bearings go on mine (Petrol 1.8), the first set started a "Screech screech screech" sound that turned into a full blown noisy as hell grooaar sound at any speed (1 mph upwards).

The second set started with the full blown noisey "Groooarr" sound without warning after simply not using the car for a while.

IMO/experience the point is this...VCU support bearings are as noisy as hell from the moment the car moves even slightly when fully matured in stuffedness. You can tell and feel where the noise is coming from.

Am running 16's on mine tyre wise, and have never had a wheel bearing go. The car is up to 126K so far. It has always been down to tyre noise. But have always dipped the clutch when going around corners to check W/B's on other cars.

I suppose with a petrol being quieter in operation, its easier to hear grumbles and groans.

PS, my sound effects are copyright protected!..lol!
