Do you have to remove the original thermostat? Or can I leave that in place? Can you do this mod if the oem thermostat hasn't failed?

The OEM Thermostat normally fails open, so your temperature gauge will not rise to the centre of the gauge as the water is constantly circulating through the radiator.

You can completely ignore the OEM stat if it's failed open, and do the mod.

Thanks! Looking at mine it's never at half way! I shall get a renault one then! Looking at other threads there seem to be too types 83c and 89c which one is best?

well my renault 5 therm arrived today ,and you where all right ! this one is smaller and seems much better made than the german one i got and broke

so first things first smeared vaseline all round the thermo and inside pipe to help push it in ,god that fits much better and easier than the last one !!!!

as far in as i can get it by hand ,so next was thinking what i could push it home with :confused::confused: then it came to me !!! perfect fit and most of us have at least one

(top of halfords axle stand is a perfect fit !!!!!!!!)
next a good wash off in boiling water to make sure the vaseline is all away and to ensure thermo is opening still

all back together ,slid phone under inlet so i could ensure band was correctly located seeing i cant see lol

all topped up

(will keep adding till all air gone)

FIRST TIME SINCE I HAD THE CAR THE DIAL SITES SPOT ON !!!!!!

AND FOR FIRST TIME EVER HOT AIR !!!!!:D:D:D:D:D
THAT HOT EVEN WITH BLOWER ON 2 I HAD TO OPEN WINDOW SLIGHTLY :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

right i won a second hand vcu and prop on german fleybay for around £60

thinking is it worth a try at that price , anyway collected it and fitted it ,all seemed ok ,heres a small vid

thing is once driving its very strange car feels much much better to drive but it has the dreded brake binding when in reverse on lock :(:(:(:(

BUT after doing around 10 miles i checked the vcu and its still cold ,surly if it was the vcu winding up as i read some where it would get hot ?

also when it does bind up its def from the back ie dif aera !!!!!! and on touvhing the dif it is quite warm ,not hot but warm !

seeing the dif has a oil drip i went to get more oil ,but when i opened the filler hole oil flow out so def was not short (enless because i did it while warm? or could the air breather pipe be blocked?)

thing is could it of been my dif that was at fault in the first place ? and what should i do now?

Every thermostat I've tested always fails in the closed position. When you test using a pan of water the stat opens when the water is heated and remains closed if knackered, the spring keeps the stat in the closed position until the wax expands.

So why do so many Freelanders, and other vehicles fail to warm up when the thermostat falls?

If I understand what you are saying, the engine would overheat, but what always seems to happen is that the engine never gets up to temperature....... ?
