Don't know what my petrol consumption has to do with Andrea's bikini, but yes the computer says 23.1 most of the time and I'm happy! It doesn't if I'm in traffic or urban mind!!! Since I drive mostly on single point lpg I don't use lots of revs, cause the first time I did it cost me an airbox from the back flash and made the bonnet, me and Joanne jump, but not as much as the dawdling Merc driver I was passing

AHhhh now it makes sense,a full tank of petrol + LPG will give you 480 miles:doh::doh:
 
Why can't we stick to Andrealouisa's bargain P38 and much more importantly, her bikini shot? I don't see what the fuss about my 24 mpg is anyway, my old 3.5 vogue achieved 23mpg on a measured full tank to full tank trip to Scarborough( 90 miles, LOTS of hills not much steady speed) and I thought the fuel gauge had broken. I think it's jealousy caused by the cleaner air our engines can breath here now all the industry has gone. The back flash was redline gearchange rapid rev drop, unburnt lpg, power back on very loud bang, loads of power! But yes I've had the system checked straight after and adjustments made.

No Fantasy about no industry mate, and remember the jap spec is set up really lean to comply with their emission regs-much tighter than ours, so I get genuinely better mpg, but I bet I don't have a full power engine tho. There are some strange fittings on the air inlets(not to do with lpg) catalyst temperature warnings, odd single pipe exhaust outlet, etc, etc. But please let's do a new thread on fuel if you want. This isn't my thread, I responded to a comment about a thread of my own. Let's talk about andrea, her grey hubby, blue rangie, good looking horse, etc here.

Don't know what the Jap spec is. I take it this is an import. But there is only so much leaning you can do to an engine, without destroying it. Ideal fuel air mix is around 14 to 1. Any less than that it's rich any more than that it would burn plugs out for fun. Maybe all V8s should be to Jap specs, seems like they know something the rest of us don't.

Ford lean burn technology ran at 17 to 1 with no problems apart from the odd flat spot. It was abandoned when stupid fuel burning cats were forced on the manufacturers:)

Rover had engines running far leaner than that, the K-Series was going to be an ultra lean burn engine until the cats came along.

I am aware of lean burn engines Keith, but a Rover V8 is not one that springs to mind.

The 4.0 and 4.6 GEMS do sort of lean burn, having chatted to Mark Adams who makes the Tornado ROM chips. In an attempt to get the most MPG, Landrover's fuel map leans right off when the car is cruising with light throttle. Mark's view is this is a serious contender for the slipped liner explanation, as the engine temperature can be seen to dramatically rise under these conditions, to cool agin once the throttle is opened and the mixture richens. This rapid heating/cooling in Marks oppinion can loosen a liner especially if the aluminium water jacket has already cracked. The slipped liners don't seem to happen in any other application of the larger bore Rover V8s, such as MGs, Morgans etc which use different injection MAPs.

I did say earlier that you won't run one lean without destroying the engine. Lean burn maybe fine on an engine designed for it, with direct injection and a few other bits and bats. But i don't think GM designed the Rover V8 with lean burn in mind. As far as i am aware lean burn is only used in light load cruise conditions even on engines designed for it. Maybe the bloke you talked to had a very good point.
 
How much the GEMS injection map effects the engine longevity is undocumented, my later Thor doesn't use GEMS injection and that engine slipped a liner at 88k miles. Mind you, it could also employ a lean map at crusie, Mark hasn't delved into the Thor injection maps, yet.
