hi everyone

does anyone now about the oil temp on the 3.9 vee8 because mine is bending the needle in thr hot zone, it also loses power and cuts out. i am in really need of help please

Hi

When did the car last have it's oil changed ? My 3.5 doesn't have an oil temp guage, however, I believe some do. you may need a new pumb or have blocked oil ways in the block or a blocked strainer (removal of sump will confirm this) Less someone else knows differently I've never heard of a vehicle cutting out from hot oil (you might want to check the oil temp/pressure switch and or the oil temp guage if fitted either of these may be faulty.

As for cutting out when needle hits the hot mark this may be causing extremely serious engine problem (I'd suggest you do a compression test and see if you get bubbles on the expansion tank as well as water in the oil (White scum will appear in the rocker box)

Are you sure it's oil temp and not Water Temp? Check the Thermostat (less the 3.9 differs from the 3.5 the thermostat can be found on the from of the inlet manifold.

I will check around to see if I can find some further info on oil Temp guages

Hi by what I understand the oil temp guage is purely electronic (Guessing it takes a signal from the oil pressure switch and converts it to temp)

Try changing it and seeing if it resolves the problem (use some contact cleaner to clean the contacts both on the oil switch and it's two terminals), you could also take a small quantity of oil out of the engine to check it's state

(If it's really runny and black change it)
(If it's thick and black that's ok ish)
any other contaminates like water/metal then you have problems

Try those two first

The loss of power and cutting out would'nt suggest an oil problem (If the oil was a problem the engine would lock up)
It suggests either a head gasket/fuel starvation (I believe some Range Rovers have a Fuel temp switch so the engine could be getting so hot shutting the fuel off.

The next thing I'm going to suggest took me three weeks to resolve

The plenum chamber and the ram housing could be leaking some how check the cold start injector for security (On the back of the plenum chamber) or the ram housing could be leaking (under the Plenum chamber) check the fuel solenoid at the back of the engine (subject to it not being moved) and the pressure switch on the fuel rail. failing that get the engine pressure tested

Does the car, before it's about to cut out start to splutter/run unevenly?

thanks for that, i ve changed the temp sender thats why i now its running hot oil looks fine i have changed the oil pressure switch, oil pressure transmitter, oil temp sender and the oil filter in the last week or so. it does splutter and run uneven like its not firing on all cylinders when it starts up after a few mins it wont rev up if i leave it about ten mins and top the expantion tank up to the top it will run ok for a bit, but it is not losing any water out of the rad just out of the over flow but water is only loop warm
