oil return pipe

I'm not sure which one he means, but there isn't a particular history of 300tdi's dumping all their oil and dying so I wouldn't worry.

It could be the turbo return pipe, he must have been very unlucky, there are plenty of scenarios where you could loose all oil and survive it.
 
If it's the same set-up as a 200 I imagine it's the cyclone breather return pipe to the sump. Will dump oil at a scary rate.

It's a rubber braid covered pipe and jubilee clipped to a spigot on the sump....some conversions report problems with front prop fouling it and flipping it off but on a standard set-up a periodic check for clip tightness and pipe condition should do the trick
 
its turbo drain and its a very uncommon issue no more likely than td or 200 or any ,usuually caused by an idiot putting a stress on pipe with poor fitting
