20w50 VR1 was in her at that time..

Ran rather well on it..

Interesting that the "New Range Rover" name as on the top of that document was given for '99 P38 modells but i might be wrong

You are correct - that document was first published in 2001 which covers the revised 4.0L engine with the new induction system.

As for the oil, I would never use 20W grade in northern climates for the reasons you mention but then there are others who swear by it and not just LR owners. Like you say, to each his own.

My RR for 10 years I owned it was dealer serviced they used 20w50 every time, as the vehicle was used 24/7 it was in for oil change twice a year sometimes without issues although is smoked on cold start up, but then that’s at 110k miles and used used what ever the weather, it seemed we always had heavy snow every year back then in Kent.

There’s no doubt my disco which was serviced again by the same dealer for the first five years was also using 20w50 oil and in all weathers.
The disco hasn’t done a high mileage but still no issues, although with my diy servicing I use 10w40 semi.

Although a bit late to change, I see no reason no to go to a 5w40 or even 5w50 if such oil is available oil, maybe the disco engine will start quicker in winter instead of the the third or fourth revolution, it’s only a couple of seconds so not a problem.
My modern cars past and present run with 5w30 and and start on the press of the button.
