This is going to sound mad but I lost all oil pressure and, after checking all the obvious stuff, took the oil pump off and found metal beneath the gears at the bottom of the pump. I then took the pump relief apart and found only a spring and no ball. There is only a depression for the ball to sit in at the end of the tube.

The metal in the pump seems to be the ball and the plunger.

Is this correct or is the spring side of the plunger also a ball shaped depression?

I took it apart with a witness and I swear this is true. The vehicle is a series 3, 1979, 2.25 diesel.

later ones dont use a ball they use a tube with a machined end if you remove the spring you cant allways tell its in there, id check its not that type rather than the ball

Ok. That must be it. I have removed a cylinder from the tube now.

It is a pity because I thought I had found my oil pressure problem and the reason that I found metal in the pump.

I get zero oil pressure and have checked the bearings. Any idea this could happen and I end up with metal in the pump?
