For any of you TD5 owners who are still considering wether to check or change the oil pump bolt....
I have a Defender 1999 TD5 so today she was due an oil change and I previously bought all the parts so I went for it. No issues with sump removal a bit of jiggery to get the sump over the diff and the bolt......was tight but as others have reported NO thread lock was present. I replaced with new that had thread lock on it but I also ran some loctite 271 along the entire length of the thread and tightened to 25nm. Here is the removed bolt !!! Thanks to all the those that wrote the "how to." TS

Another job to add to the list....
How many miles had yours done? I'm on 117K, on a 2001MY 10P now so thinking I may have got away with it!?... also how long do you rekon it took you?

Done them with 70k,120k & 150k ! Last one I did'nt even bother trying to wiggle the sump cover out, if you rest it on the front axle you have enough room to change the bolt ! An hour or so should see it done. If you want to take the sump out to clean it you have to jack the chassisup with front wheels in the air to have enough room to get it out between the front axle !

It does seem to be a grey area, as Land Rover do not appear to have a record of the first engine No. to have thread-lock on this bolt!... of those done, were they all loose!?
... no chance of you going to Valloire show with a bag of spanners is there?... maybe I should really do it before I go... hmmm:rolleyes:

Sorry for the delay in replying (moved from sky to Virgin Media), my TD5 has 143k on the clock and as i said in the thread it was tight so no catastrophy about to happen !!
I took my time with it (stop for T & Sani etc...), about 4hrs in all inc tools out, clean up & tools away. To remove the sump i removed the rear steering linkage
(1bolt RH wheel) and then to completely remove the sump i placed a jack under one of the Front winch lugs and raised enough for the sump to drop out rearwards
(front wheels didn't leave the deck so not that high). While it was out i washed the sump out with diesel, good clean for the new gaskit & i used a high temperature gaskit sealer on both sides of the new gaskit so it held it in place while i attached it to the engine. It really is just peace of mind, i love my Landy, they dont make em anymore, i
wont find another one like mine and i wasn't prepared to throw away a perfectly good engine for a £5 bolt......when its done you can put that issue out of your head and wait for next one !!!!! TS
