Oil overfill

I did a service the other day and was in a bit of a rush as it was starting to rain. I drained the oil then stuck 6.5 litres in and filled new oil filter with oil. I checked the level this morning and its half an inch over the full mark :doh: Will it be ok or will my engine explode next time I reach 80 mph

Just found this from google and im no expert but it sounds rather dodgy, if it were me i wud drop a touch out even though it will be messy.

Overfilling causes something called windage where the crankshaft wisks up the oil reducing lubrication. an overfilled sump also increases the crankcase pressure and puts a strain on the oil seals.

Cheers Sniffmydick [ you should pay more attention to personal hygiene ] So I should drain a bit off then ? If you leave the filler cap on and unscrew the drain plug ,it might not spray out quite as fast or maybe wrap a rag round the sump hole while you do it . Then get the plug back in. Can't see it being easy though.

You only need to lose about .25ltr to make it right so if it were me I would loosen BUT NOT REMOVE the sump plug and just let some oil oooooooooze out.

Cheers Biglad. Hows the weather ? bloody freezing here , Ive got me wood burner going. So if I just loosen it and let ooze out a bit shouldn,t have to remove plug. I,ll give it a go tommorow. How much oil do you have to go over the full mark before it becomes a bit dodgy ?

Hi Danny, if you undo the plug until it's just about on the last thread you'll get slow seepage but still keep things under control.

If you are level dipping on a cold engine, you want the oil level to be no higher that the top mark.

And yes, the weather is officially shît and we've still been having our fires on - in May !!!! Unheard of before this year.

All done now and back to the right level. I did it as Biglad said and it wasn,t that bad. Had to drain half a litre out

Get the engine hot ,remove filler cap and then loosen drain plug until its just on the last thread. It then came out in a slow steady stream . I just dipped the stick and checked it until it was right then tightened the plug. Thanks Biglad.
