So after a few months of Range Rover ownership i have juust had y first Moment! Stopped at the filling station yesterday (petrol, oil, tires, fill the screen wash etc) Everything fine but noticed a small weep of oil from the oil filter.

Drove home less than one mile, parked got out and noticed smell of burning oil, looked under the car and saw several rapid drips of ol from the front left hand side of the engine. Opened the bonnet and what had been a weep a mile ago was now every where!!!! Oil coating everything below and back from the oil filter holder (we have a 2002 HSE).

I let the engine cool down and very soon the dripping stopped and the cleaning could begin. i Gunked the muck off and dried everything. When i removed the oil filter cap the O ring was split and in bits so that at least answered the question as to why all the oil.

Quite trip to my local LR dealer and parts sorted for new filter and O ring. All fitted with no problem, Oil level checked and topped up. Run the engine for a few mins, no more leek, checked and topped up the oil again (enough to fill the filter).

However the oil warning light creeps on after a few mins. I dried the sensor as much as I could but I know it got wet when I cleaned the mess up. Engine running fine, no knocks, smoke etc. Removed the sensor and let it ry out in the sun. refitted it and it stayed off for a while then crept on, then faded, then on again then faded and so on.

Could this be just a slight short on the sensor from wetting wet or an I looking at selling the house to pay for something major?

Please help.

Many thanks

PS i already realise im an idiot for getting everything wet when I cleaned the engine so no need to remind me.

hey tasker
is it a p38 or lr322,if its the p38 you should follow the 2 black rubber pipes on the let hand side of the motor, if these are leaking be very ****ing careful to pry around them as they are connected to an oil cooler thats positioned in the front like a radiator, the heads of these pipes have o rings and a push in type system and if it does not go your way say hello to a lot more oil.
then the neck at the radiator side is on a turn and if you overtighten this and crack your rad say hell to a few pounds leaving your pocket, this rad is almost the same thickness as a coke can and should be delt with and inspected for and hairline cracks,or reweld/patch or new,
from the sounds of it that is where your problem is if its a p38,as for the oil light not showing, i dont know, mine was exactly the same and my driveway is definate proof of how much oil came out,
give that a look and hopefully i answered your question

You said the oil light was coming and going which could just be pressure variations as the pump, filter, cooler and other nooks and crannies fill with oil. When you refilled did you put in the amount the book says is capacity or just what took it to the line whilst stationary? If the latter then you could still be a fair bit short.

Hi.
When I topped up the oil I filled to the line on the dipstick, ran the engine for a couple of mins, let things settle then topped up again. I did this a couple of times till having run the engine the level was just below the higher mark. Thought of giving the sensor a wd40 squirt to help drive the moisture out. What do you think?

Thanks for the help.
