Hi
Iv just bought a landrover discovery and it has a few oil leaks.
Is it a big job to put a new sump gasket on it as it seems that that is the biggest leak area it has got.
I havnt really had a chance to have a good look to see where it is coming from but the top of the engine is dry and my suspision is the sump gasket, is there any other area's that are prone to leaks?
cheers
Matt

Which Disco is it Matt? If its a 300TDi then it doesn't have a sump gasket. The sump is sealed with RTV sealant.
If you do decide to remove the sump then jack the car up and use axel stands to support the chassis, this lets the axel drop as far as possible to give you more room to work in, you might also need to removing the steering damper and the tie bar that goes from one hub to the other...its then a straightforward job to unbolt the sump as long as the bolts don't round off when you try to undo them.
Don't forget, a little oil leak, can go a long way, it might not be as bad as it first appears.
Other places that leak....
Rocker cover gasket, oil filter housing, oil cooler pipes, front and rear crankshaft seals, breather unit and pipes, turbo supply and return pipes...
As long as you aren't having to top the oil up too often just think of it as a program of continual oil change....

Yeah it is a 300tdi, where can i get this RTV sealant and is it in a big tube like silicone?
havnt really had it long enough to work out how much oil it is loosing, im having to gauge it off the works carpark as i have got a gravel drive which means i dont get a b*llockin for it leaking at home, i jus have to keep kicking the gravel about. haha
It seems to be from the very bottom of the engine so im guessing that it is hopefully the sump gasket, or maybe at worst the crank seals!
What oil do you guys use in the trans box, gearbox and diffs cos i think it needs a change, bet thats not cheap!
cheers!

before you start taking sumps off and things - try tightening the sump bolts. i had a weep from my sump seal so i nipped up the bolts and not a drop since

also, clean it all up, drive it for a bit and look again to be sure where it is leaking from...as I said earlier a little leak goes a long way, this can make it difficult to be sure where the leak is

The turbo return pipe is a RPITA for leaking, it's worth washing down this area before pulling sumps off ect.

regards

Dave
