After a full rebuild on the rear axle, after a while, oil started to drip out of the end of the flange, not the gasket, the end cap. Is oil supposed to get that far? i don't think so, the cap IS cracked in a few places, and i don't know if that is a case of oil seal failure, or just the cap cracked. I don't think oil is supposed to get to the end cap, but can anyone confirm my suspicions?

Mine did this shortly after overhauling the axles turned out that the new BP hub seals started to leak oil onto the rear disc's and the end caps, since replaced the seals with bearmach ones.
originally your wheel bearings would have ran on grease so would have grease hub seals but sometimes peeps replace the grease hub seals for oil hub seals and remove the halfshaft seals to allow the wheel bearings to run on oil so there is a chance your axles have been messed about with but hopefully new decent std hub seals should sort it but do inspect the stub axles to see if the half shaft seals are still in ;):)

Thanks! so it's not normal.. thought not. I replaced the seals down to stub axle, and i know the half shaft ones were in, there is just one problem... BLOODY BRITPART. I'll have em replaced with better ones soon.

I was getting oil in my hubs but this has ceased since fitting new seals to the inside of the stub axles. I think mine were Corteco brand seals. That was eight months ago and so far all is well.

Just a question, would this be ''RTC3511G - Hub Oil Seal - twin lip type''?

The ones for my stub axles were FTC5268 (from KA159807) on the rear and FTC5268 (from VA104815) on the front. So same seal but different change points. I think your number is the hub seal (up to 1986). Won't do any harm to change them too I suppose.

Depends on which axle you have. Older ones ( from Ninetys and One Tens ) had oil/lubed bearings, so oil flowed all the way through to the rubber hub caps you're referring to.
This design may have been carried through to early 200tdi Defenders, but I'm not sure.

Nah, there was no oil coming out of the flanges before, and the axle was overfilled. And there was one present when taking everything apart. I thought about that though, it could have been the case. Good suggestion.
